The angle that lefties can create serving to the right-hander&#8217;s backhand on the ad-court is almost mythical in its effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>That was clearly in Toni Nadal&#8217;s mind when he famously suggested that his nephew <a data-player-guid=\"f091e8bf-f001-4687-0448-4b009dd966e8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=261\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael Nadal<\/a> play left-handed. Nadal is naturally right-handed. That&#8217;s the way I have always done it. I could never throw with my left hand until I was about 15. I had to really work on it, which is weird because of my serve. I don&#8217;t know, I&#8217;m just a weird guy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Three-time Grand Slam winner <a data-player-guid=\"8a8c527d-ce0d-d647-7004-ebcd2098b97a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=745\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angelique Kerber<\/a> also did everything else right-handed but played tennis with her left. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/player\/_\/id\/2366\/cameron-norrie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Norrie<\/a>, who played <a data-player-guid=\"4a27bb1c-2422-55c3-208b-9e9d8c1f30af\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=296\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Novak Djokovic<\/a> in the US Open third round Friday, has as well.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Twenty-two time major champion Rafael Nadal is perhaps the most famous righty-turned-lefty in the sport.\u00a0Adam Pretty\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But some players who could have been left-handed ended up playing with their right, including the American <a data-player-guid=\"8965d2eb-1419-a6e6-5d3f-573b8b0bc565\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Paul<\/a>, who lost in the third round Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of weird,&#8221; Paul told reporters at the US Open. &#8220;I&#8217;m all messed up. I write left-handed, I eat left-handed, brush my teeth left-handed. But I play all my sports right-handed, and I kick right-footed. I wish I had [played left-handed], it would have been nice.<\/p>\n<p>All of ESPN. I guess when they handed me a racket, I just grabbed it in my right hand. My mom is the same. My mom plays all her sports righty and writes lefty. My brother&#8217;s fully lefty, and my sister&#8217;s fully righty. So we&#8217;re all over the place.&#8221; When told Draper was right-handed but played left-handed, he added: &#8220;I wish I was like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From 10% to 12% of the world&#8217;s population is left-handed, including 11 of the top 100 male players and just seven of the top 100 women.<\/p>\n<p>Some players are ambidextrous, such as <a data-player-guid=\"c1803695-bd48-34c0-fd09-14136ad60f86\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=399\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maria Sharapova<\/a>, the five-time major winner, who used to hit some shots left-handed when pushed out of position. As a young teen, Sharapova even experimented with playing left-handed properly, but she eventually went back to right-handed. Or <a data-player-guid=\"4f7e0288-83fe-db8f-7967-f1d6704c7a45\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marion Bartoli<\/a>, who does most things left-handed but served right-handed and hit the ball with two hands on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>US Open Men&#8217;s Odds<\/p>\n<p><a data-player-guid=\"4c9a7ff1-2feb-b4ab-fb3f-9fc7d9fd3f9f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3641\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leylah Fernandez<\/a>, the Canadian who finished runner-up at the US Open in 2021, could have been either left or right-handed. &#8220;I&#8217;m able to do a couple of things with my right hand,&#8221; she said in New York. &#8220;I much prefer to throw a baseball with my right hand and sign with my right hand, but I write essays with my left hand. I&#8217;m a little weird like that. It&#8217;s just whatever comes naturally to me. Tennis was always left-handed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other players, rather surprisingly, were left-handed in most things but chose to play tennis with their right-hand. Maureen Connolly was encouraged by her coach to switch from left to right, while Australians Ken Rosewall and Margaret Court were encouraged to play right-handed by their respective fathers.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Recent Citi Open winner Leylah Fernandez says she can do some things with her right side, some with her left, but plays left-handed in tennis.\u00a0WILL OLIVER\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t hurt them; Connolly won nine slams in the 1950s when tennis was officially still amateur; Rosewall won eight singles majors and Court won 24, putting her joint-top of the all-time list alongside Djokovic.<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s US Open Odds<\/p>\n<p>When <a data-player-guid=\"2f4ba4bb-2820-ad6f-6e14-dba4a7059e64\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2202\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Borna Coric<\/a>, the Croatian player, first went to play tennis, his father told the coach that he was doing everything with his left hand. But when he was asked to pick up the racket, Coric surprised his father.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did it with my right, unfortunately,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennismajors.com\/atp\/meeting-borna-coric-tennis-majors-own-words-interview-299286.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coric told Tennis Majors<\/a>.
