Szczerek showed the hat to his sons before putting it in a bag, and the boy asked, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video of the incident circulated online, sparking widespread criticism of Szczerek\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to unequivocally apologize to the young boy, his family, all the fans, and the player himself,\u201d Szczerek said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/piotr.szczerek.545\/posts\/pfbid02hgzrtcFXgsjRbnyq3B3ZkPTA3bj3X4VF5RbGY1CKLskwyZXfkhVHdcP9gfoNX5ZWl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on social media<\/a>. \u201d It was never my intent to steal away a prized memento from the young fan. Majchrzak didn\u2019t notice Szczerek intercepting his hat in the moment, but he learned about it later and asked social media to help him find the fan.<\/p>\n<p>Majchrzak\u2019s Instagram followers came through, and he met up with the young fan, named Brock, after his warm-up Saturday. Fans crowd the rail, jockeying for position and doing their best to draw attention. The players, who just finished playing a match, are trying to honor the wishes of fans while also moving toward the locker room.<\/p>\n<p>Iga \u015awi\u0105tek, the U.S. Open\u2019s No. 2 seed who advanced to the quarterfinals Monday, said sometimes she\u2019ll be in an awkward situation where \u201cseven people reach out for one thing.\u201d She doesn\u2019t have a set method for choosing a fan to give some gear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pick a person kind of randomly or whoever shouts louder,\u201d she said. \u201cI know it\u2019s not fair, but obviously not everybody is going to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u015awi\u0105tek said it\u2019s not strange for fans to want their game-worn gear because \u201cI would love to have a sweaty towel of Rafa\u2019s when I was a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she did say it\u2019s always odd when \u201cI try to give something to the kid, and the adult grabs it. You know, then I try to be, like, \u2018Come on, that\u2019s not the point.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix Auger-Aliassime, who advanced to the men\u2019s quarterfinals Monday, said he was on the losing end in a similar incident when he was a kid, and that it changed his perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was probably 13, and I was with friends,\u201d he said. \u201cI kind of went to grab, like, a wristband. I got hit in the face, and actually, my nose started bleeding. I was, like, \u2018My God, I\u2019m bleeding for a wristband.
