\n Serena Williams<\/a> might not be at this year\u2019s US Open<\/a>, but she is keeping a close eye on proceedings from afar \u2013 specifically, her sister Venus<\/a>\u2019 surprise run in the women\u2019s doubles.\n <\/p>\n

\n Venus and partner Leylah Fernandez reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Zhang Shuai and Ekaterina Alexandrova on Monday having not dropped a set in the competition.\n <\/p>\n

\n They will face top seeds Taylor Townsend<\/a> and Kate\u0159ina Siniakov\u00e1 next, and that match will have keen interest from 23-time grand slam singles champion Serena, who has been watching with her family back home.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cShe\u2019s definitely coaching from afar,\u201d Venus told reporters about having support from her sister. \u201cShe\u2019s so excited. She gets so nervous watching, and she\u2019s got the kids watching, they\u2019re all at home, just really on our side.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Which begs the question: Might Serena pay a visit to New York to watch some of her sister\u2019s matches in person?\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIf she came, it would be a dream for both of us and we\u2019d have her on the court coaching,\u201d said Venus, before jokingly adding: \u201cWe\u2019d force her to hit, even though she doesn\u2019t hit often. It\u2019s probably best she doesn\u2019t come because we\u2019d probably bully her.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\"Fernandez<\/p>\n

\n While Serena stepped away from competitive tennis at the US Open three years ago, 45-year-old Venus, a seven-time grand slam singles champion, is still making occasional appearances at the highest level.\n <\/p>\n

\n She accepted a wild card entry into the women\u2019s singles draw \u2013 managing to take a set off 11th seed Karolina Muchov\u00e1 in the first round \u2013 and also appeared alongside Reilly Opelka in the mixed doubles<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n But it\u2019s in the women\u2019s doubles that she\u2019s had most success with Fernandez, a former singles finalist at Flushing Meadows in 2021.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAt first, I was thinking, \u2018No. I\u2019m not very good at doubles,\u2019\u201d Venus said about the decision to enter the women\u2019s doubles. \u201cI haven\u2019t played a lot of tennis in general. I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my God, I don\u2019t want to get out there and be making mistakes.\u2019\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cBut then an hour later, I was like, I think I want to. At first, I was just thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I can actually do it.\u2019 Then I was thinking, \u2018Okay, maybe I can. Maybe we have a chance to just get in the draw.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n As for her 22-year-old partner, Fernandez says that it\u2019s been a huge learning curve to play alongside one of the game\u2019s most experienced and decorated players. Venus won 14 grand slam doubles titles with Serena between 1999 and 2016, as well as three Olympic gold medals.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m growing a lot, actually,\u201d Fernandez told reporters. \u201cI feel like my team members and even my family say, \u2018Wow, you are growing just by playing with Venus, learning from her.\u2019\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI mean, you (Venus) may not say much on the bench, but whatever you say, I\u2019m like a sponge and kind of soaking everything in.
