Playing with fearless aggression and unrelenting intent, Auger-Aliassime seized control of their two-hour, 16-minute battle, despite conceding an early break.

This marks Auger-Aliassime’s fourth major quarter-final, and first since his run at three straight majors from Wimbledon 2021 through the 2022 Australian Open. Standing in his way next is eighth seed Alex de Minaur.

“Today is my first time playing on Arthur Ashe [Stadium] in a few years and I think it feels even better than the first time,” said Auger-Aliassime, who reached the 2021 semi-finals in New York. “At 21, I was on my way up. I had a few setbacks, injuries, struggles with [my] confidence. Then to come back the second time in the quarter-finals here, it feels much better, more deserved.”

After lifting ATP Tour trophies in Adelaide and Montpellier across the first two months of this year, Auger-Aliassime struggled to maintain his form, particularly at the Grand Slam tournaments. He fell in his Roland Garros opener and in the second round at Wimbledon. But at the season’s final major, the Canadian has rediscovered both his rhythm and his confidence.

Despite trailing early 2-4 in the first set, Auger-Aliassime strung together two blistering games from 5-5 to clinch the opener. The pivotal blow, however, came midway through the second, when Rublev squandered a 40/0 lead on serve with a rash forehand error and back-to-back double faults.

Auger-Aliassime’s aggression is evident in the statistics. He fired 42 winners to Rublev’s 22 en route to his second win in nine Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings (Rublev leads 7-2).

“To keep my cool and to be more calm and poised [when] finishing the match was the key,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I had many tough battles with Andrey in the past. Sometimes I would be up, like I was today, and he would come back. So it was very important for me to stay ahead and to keep putting pressure all the way until the last point.”

With his run in New York so far, Auger-Aliassime is up nine spots to No. 18 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Rublev, who was aiming to reach his 11th major quarter-final, is currently two spots higher at No. 13.

Earlier, De Minaur also underlined his intent at the US Open, where he is gearing up in his bid to crack the quarter-finals at a major for the first time in his career.

Despite dropping serve twice, the 26-year-old Australian produced a confident, counter-punching display sweep past World No. 435 Leandro Riedi 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour, 33 minutes. De Minaur, the No. 8 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, awaits a quarter-final showdown with Felix Auger-Aliassime or Andrey Rublev.

De Minaur, the 10-time ATP Tour is into his sixth major quarter-final, and third at the US Open, but he has never advanced beyond this stage.

“I’m super proud of what I’m doing,” De Minaur said. “Ultimately, this is where I want to be, playing for the big titles, I want to be in contention. I’m putting myself in the right places. Even though he hit 20 winners throughout the clash, Riedi also leaked 39 unforced errors.

“I was happy with my level, my focus. I knew he had some big, big shots and he’s had a hell of a week coming through qualies,” added De Minaur. “I wish him nothing but the best, but I’m just happy to be through to the quarter-finals.”

Riedi, who came through qualifying, was competing in the fourth round at a major for the first time. The Swiss player, who underwent two knee surgeries in the past 12 months ago, will leave New York having risen 271 spots to No. 164 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Highlighted by winning his first title of the season in Washington last month, De Minaur owns a Tour-leading 28 wins on hard courts in 2025, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
