From mountaintops to sea floors, Santa Cruz-based author Bridget A. Lyons explores the diverse species that roam our planet in her new book, \u201cEntwined: Dispatches from the Intersection of Species,\u201d set to publish this Thursday. Next Tuesday, July 22, from 7 to 8 p.m., Bookshop Santa Cruz will host Lyons for a discussion on how we can build empathy for wild creatures through writing, art and science.<\/p>\n

In 14 essays, Lyons, a wilderness guide, traveler and explorer, takes her reader across the globe, from Alaska, Greece and Honduras to Santa Cruz beaches, to explore the wonders of the unique flora and fauna she encountered on her travels, combining a memoir, scientific research and travelog into one book. \u201cEvery single species on this planet exhibits an array of amazing talents, unusual habits, fascinating skills, and ingenious adaptations that enable them to thrive in their surroundings,\u201d writes Lyons. Besides spotlighting our non-human neighbors, Lyons explores questions regarding human impact on nature, such as whether humans\u2019 well-intentioned efforts to protect our planet have backfired and what it means to respect all creatures, from plants to animals.<\/p>\n
