HONOLULU (Island News) — Hurricane Kiko is gaining strength in the eastern Pacific but remains far from Hawaii.<\/p>\n

As of early this morning, the storm was located about 1,815 miles east of Hilo, moving slowly west at 6 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. Kiko is expected to continue strengthening and could become a major hurricane by Wednesday night. However, it is still too far away to affect the islands, and there are no watches or warnings in place.<\/p>\n

Here in Hawaii, today\u2019s weather will be mostly calm. Scattered showers are moving across the islands, especially over windward areas and the Big Island and Maui, where low-level clouds are moving in. Winds are light to moderate due to a weak high-pressure system north of the state.<\/p>\n

Leeward areas should stay mostly dry, though afternoon clouds and a few light showers may pop up along the Kona slopes. Expect similar conditions to continue through the rest of the week, with no major weather changes expected.<\/p>\n

While Hurricane Kiko is being closely watched, it poses no immediate threat to Hawaii, and today\u2019s local weather remains fairly typical for early September.<\/p>\n
