Horne\u2019s latest image of the Spaghetti Nebula (Simeis 147) combines 569 hours of exposure time captured over the past three winters. Few photographic genres test a photographer\u2019s patience quite like astrophotography. <\/p>\n<p>  Photographing \u2018Spaghetti Nebula and Mars\u2019 for Over Three Winters <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very faint target, and it\u2019s also my favorite night-sky object,\u201d Horne tells PetaPixel of the Spaghetti Nebula. \u201cI love wispy nebulae with fine filaments of structure.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Horne originally planned to spend two winters capturing exposures of the Spaghetti Nebula. However, when Mars made a \u201csomewhat surprise appearance in the frame,\u201d Horne knew he had to \u201cknock this image out of the park,\u201d so he tweaked his plans and added a third winter of work to his plans. <\/p>\n<p>The longer the exposure time, the less visible the noise and the greater the signal. More exposure time means Horne can \u201cpush the data a little farther and expose more faint details without as much noise getting in the way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He says there is a point of diminishing returns. However, given that his area in Tennessee has quite a bit of light pollution, it takes him longer to hit that point than it would for astrophotographers in extremely dark places. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continued to notice improvements in the data until the very end of collecting my data,\u201d Horne explains. \u201cIf I were imaging from darker skies, I could have gotten a similar result with significantly less data.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Spaghetti-Mars-crop1-800x730.jpg\" alt=\"A vibrant image of glowing, colorful nebulae in space, featuring swirling red, orange, and blue filaments of gas and dust against a dark background, resembling intricate cosmic clouds.\" width=\"800\" height=\"730\" class=\"size-large wp-image-804863\"  \/>A crop to show more of the Spaghetti Nebula\u2019s incredible details. Nearly 570 Hours of Exposure Time  <\/p>\n<p>To put the over 569 hours of exposure time another way, that\u2019s over three total weeks that Horne\u2019s camera shutter was open, pointed at the Spaghetti Nebula. Since it is such a faint object \u2014 it is about as faint as the dimmest stars in the night sky that can be seen by a human eye \u2014 it takes a lot of time to capture all the data required to create a final image like Horne\u2019s. <\/p>\n<p>He says one of the greatest challenges was organizing all the data, including multiple calibration frames. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPixinsight, though not the easiest software to use, is powerful enough to make this all possible,\u201d the photographer explains. <\/p>\n<p>However, the biggest challenge in total was setting up his camera and telescope rig for 147 different nights over three years. <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Spaghetti-Mars-crop2-800x473.jpg\" alt=\"A bright star glows amid a red-hued nebula scattered with small stars. This meant that I would often set up and try to image when it was somewhat cloudy with a chance of rain,\u201d Horne says, adding that the weather at his home in Nashville is \u201ca bit unpredictable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Since he wanted to risk it for the chance at as much exposure time as possible, he needed to build a homemade rain detector so he could rush outside to save his gear if the rain turned from a risk to reality. Horne built a rain detector with the aid of an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZtaM-41WN2s&amp;t=2s\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">tutorial<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Astrolips2000\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Astrolips 2000 on YouTube<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>While some of Horne\u2019s peers use <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/07\/11\/photographers-build-the-worlds-largest-remote-observatory\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remote observatories<\/a> to image from darker skies, he prefers setting up in his own backyard. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love being outside my gear at night, under the stars,\u201d Horne says. He has been conducting wide-field imaging for the past few years and utilized his wide-field telescope for his new Spaghetti Nebula image. <\/p>\n<p>His telescope has a 180mm focal length and a monochromatic image sensor. He uses narrowband filters to isolate different wavelengths of light, including those emitted by hydrogen, oxygen, and sulphur. He also used RGB filters for the stars and Mars. <\/p>\n<p>Since he was working from home, he could also move his rig around in his yard to get as much data as possible. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that I don\u2019t think many astrophotographers realize or do. As the winter progresses, the time that the Spaghetti Nebula rises and sets behind my treeline changes. By moving my rig to either the East or West side of my yard at the appropriate time of the winter, I was able to get an extra hour of data each night that I wouldn\u2019t have gotten if I kept my rig in one spot,\u201d Horne says. <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/M45-Pleiades-in-HOORGB-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"A colorful image of outer space features a star cluster glowing blue amid swirling clouds of red, pink, and gray nebulae, set against a background densely filled with stars.\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"size-large wp-image-804756\"  \/>M45 (Pleiades) with Hydrogen Alpha<br \/>\n Image Processing Pushed His MacBook Pro to the Limits  <\/p>\n<p>Image capture is exceptionally challenging, but only one part of the equation. Image processing \u201cwas a real challenge, as well,\u201d Horne explains. <\/p>\n<p>After tinkering with different color processing techniques, Horne ultimately settled on a \u201ctypical SHO channel combination with a FORAXX palette channel combination.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>While technically, astrophotographs like Horne\u2019s are \u201cfalse color,\u201d that\u2019s a somewhat misleading way to think about it. The color channels he assigned are rooted in reality and how the human eye would perceive the scene, if it were possible to view it. The wavelengths correlate to realistic color channels. While this technique is based on science, many astrophotographers also strive to balance reality with something visually pleasing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcessing is very subjective, but I think most of us try to keep our images as close to \u2018real\u2019 as possible, \u201cHorne says. \u201cMost of us aren\u2019t doing science work, so it\u2019s not imperative that we keep it scientifically accurate, but we like to try.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s all about pushing the data as far as I can without creating artifacts,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n<p>Horne says the final integration of all his images took 58 hours on a high-end MacBook Pro with an M1 Max chip. Although not Apple\u2019s newest machine, it remains very powerful. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a real monster of a data set,\u201d Horne remarks. <\/p>\n<p> Horne Is No Stranger to Very Long Exposure Times  <\/p>\n<p>His Spaghetti Nebula image is the largest project he has ever undertaken, but he is no stranger to working with massive data sets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always do long multi-hundred-hour projects,\u201d Horne says, \u201cbut usually not more than 300ish hours.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t love doing mosaics. I prefer to pump a ton of data into one frame and see what kind of faint details I can reveal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He thinks his new shot is tied for his favorite shot in his portfolio. <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heart-Nebula-Widefield-800x535.jpg\" alt=\"A vibrant image of a nebula in space, featuring swirling clouds of red, orange, and blue gas and dust, set against a dark starry background. There\u2019s something about the color balance of The Heart Nebula image that I love so much, plus all the tiny planetary nebulae in that image,\u201d Horne says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it doesn\u2019t have all of the fine wispy filamentary structures that the Spaghetti Nebula has.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> A Lifelong Love of the Cosmos  <\/p>\n<p>Horne says he got into astrophotography because of his father. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was really young, maybe four years old, he let me see Saturn through his telescope. I was mesmerized,\u201d Horne remembers. \u201cI\u2019ve been fascinated (obsessed?) with astronomy ever since.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Horne and some of his friends in the astrophotography community discovered a small planetary nebula in one of Horne\u2019s deep integrations, and Horne named it after his dad just before his passing in December 2023. \u2028\u2028<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/The-Edge-of-the-Elephant-Trunk-800x509.jpg\" alt=\"Colorful image of outer space showing swirling clouds of orange, blue, and black nebulae with scattered bright stars throughout the scene, creating a vibrant cosmic landscape.\" width=\"800\" height=\"509\" class=\"size-large wp-image-804754\"  \/>The Edge of the Elephant Trunk <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/HORFULEVREB-2-800x575.jpg\" alt=\"A dense field of stars in deep space, with a prominent bright red star or nebula at the center, surrounded by numerous smaller white, yellow, and orange stars against a dark background.\" width=\"800\" height=\"575\" class=\"size-large wp-image-804758\"  \/>Don\u2019s Nebula \u2014 HorFulEvReb 2, discovered near the Elephant Trunk Nebula by Horne, Fulda, Evans, and Rebula. The quartet honored Horne\u2019s father, Don, by naming the nebula in his honor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the last things I was able to tell him was, \u2018Dad, we named a nebula after you!&#8217;\u201d Horne says. \u201cIt was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Through his passion for astronomy and astrophotography, which was sparked that night when he looked through the telescope with his dad, Horne says he has learned many important life lessons, including patience. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of imaging is difficult. It\u2019s hard to assemble a rig. It\u2019s hard to set up a rig. It\u2019s hard to find targets, focus the scope, and keep it focused throughout nightly temperature changes. It\u2019s hard to even understand where to get started in this hobby,\u201d Horne explains. <\/p>\n<p>However, with years of practice and a lot of patience, he has refined a successful workflow that works for him. <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Lion-and-Wizard-800x538.jpg\" alt=\"Bright, swirling red, orange, and blue clouds of interstellar gas and dust forming a colorful nebula, with scattered stars visible throughout the cosmic scene.\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\" class=\"size-large wp-image-804757\"  \/>The Lion and the Wizard <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hobby is difficult, and without a strong drive to improve, the difficulty can easily overcome you,\u201d Horne adds. <\/p>\n<p>He admits that some of his earliest astrophotography efforts were \u201cawful,\u201d but he loves astronomy and stuck with it. He had the spark needed to dive headfirst into deep-sky imaging, and the results speak for themselves.
