{"id":131228,"date":"2025-09-04T03:02:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T03:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/131228\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T03:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T03:02:06","slug":"oak-ridge-is-using-diamonds-to-marry-quantum-classical-computers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/131228\/","title":{"rendered":"Oak Ridge is using diamonds to marry quantum, classical computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Computers with components made of diamond are being installed at\u00a0Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee in a bid to marry quantum information technologies with classical computers, the lab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/news\/quantum-brilliance-ornl-pioneer-quantum-classical-hybrid-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced on Tuesday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quantum science promises advances in fields from cryptography to chemistry, but realizing that promise\u00a0depends on finding a way to connect quantum and classical systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumbrilliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quantum Brilliance<\/a> system on site, we\u2019ll be maturing the real mechanics of hybrid computing \u2014 co\u2011scheduling, end\u2011to\u2011end performance tuning, data and workflow orchestration, workforce development and more \u2014 so we can eventually move HPC-quantum integration from a conceptual pilot to a fully embedded capability within leadership computing,\u201d said Ashley Barker, who directs Oak Ridge&#8217;s Leadership Computing Facility Program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quantum Brilliance\u2019s products use synthetic diamonds to ease\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/emerging-tech\/2024\/09\/so-you-want-build-quantum-computer\/399478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">challenges<\/a>\u00a0of today&#8217;s quantum systems, such as external noise that\u00a0introduces\u00a0errors into quantum calculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiamond is extremely hard, so even at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, there isn\u2019t sufficient thermal energy to generate the vibrations that would typically disrupt qubit coherence,\u201d said CEO Mark Luo. \u201cThis intrinsic stability allows our QPUs to function without the complexity and cost of cryogenics, laser and vacuum systems.
