{"id":13192,"date":"2025-07-16T03:14:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T03:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/13192\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T03:14:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T03:14:05","slug":"raleighs-liberation-station-bookstore-to-reopen-in-montague-plaza-on-juneteenth-2026-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/13192\/","title":{"rendered":"Raleigh&#8217;s Liberation Station bookstore to reopen in Montague Plaza on Juneteenth 2026 :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Raleigh Black-owned children\u2019s bookstore plans to reopen<br \/>\nafter closing its doors to its downtown location last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will find our place; we will find the place that was designed<br \/>\nfor us,\u201d Victoria Scott-Miller told WRAL in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>A promise kept, and the location is just as central to the story.\n<\/p>\n<p>Liberation Station plans to reopen in Montague Plaza, a<br \/>\n15,000 square foot space in Southeast Raleigh dedicated<br \/>\nto\u00a0housing\u00a0Black-owned businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re excited to bring authors and illustrators back to the<br \/>\ncity of Raleigh, especially southeast Raleigh,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller and her husband discovered a need in the<br \/>\nTriangle for\u00a0kids&#8217;\u00a0books featuring children of color.\u00a0The two\u00a0started<br \/>\nselling\u00a0books out of their trunk, and then in\u00a0pop-up stores\u00a0before<br \/>\nmoving to\u00a0a location in downtown Raleigh.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>However, a year after they started, they say\u00a0they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/story\/black-owned-children-s-bookstore-in-raleigh-moving-after-threats-owner-says\/21358758\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faced<br \/>\nsuch a barrage of racism and threats they decided to close.<\/a>\u00a0The feeling Scott-Miller<br \/>\nsaid was devastating. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had to close not because we failed, we had to close<br \/>\nbecause our nervous systems have been broken,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was such a<br \/>\ndisruption of peace that we felt that we could not effectively serve our<br \/>\ncommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As painful as the closure was, Scott-Miller said she felt it<br \/>\nwas necessary because it gave an opportunity to reassess.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m grateful that we had an opportunity to step back<br \/>\nand that we had a community that loves us so much that they allowed us to rest,<br \/>\nthey allowed us to pause and reimagine what it could look like, um, not only<br \/>\nthe bookstore, but then our own personal safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller said their new location will be three times the<br \/>\nsize of their original location in downtown Raleigh. She said the space itself<br \/>\nfeels like a haven for children to feel seen and represented. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBookshelves are a form of protest and liberation and joy,\u201d<br \/>\nshe said. \u201cSo, the fact that they get to see themselves in our store, on every<br \/>\nsingle corner of our store, every shelf is dedicated to the experience of Black<br \/>\nchildhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberation Station will reopen on Juneteenth next<br \/>\nyear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller said they plan to expand programming to include<br \/>\nstory times and author workshops with kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller said they are fundraising as they are preparing<br \/>\nto reopen next June. There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/gofund.me\/dac56fe8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GoFundMe link<\/a><br \/>\nto help get them going.
