\n\tAndy Serkis<\/a> recently told Metro<\/a> that he is heading to New Zealand this month to begin work on \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum<\/a>,\u201d the new \u201cRings\u201d movie that he is starring in and directing. Warner Bros. has already announced<\/a> the movie will open in theaters Dec. 17, 2027. \u201cGollum\u201d will be the first live-action \u201cRings\u201d movie since 2014\u2019s \u201cThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,\u201d directed by Peter Jackson.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m very excited to go back. I leave for New Zealand on Saturday [Sept. 6],\u201d Serkis said. \u201cWe\u2019re going down to start prep and working on it, because I\u2019m directing. I\u2019m thrilled to return to the family that I\u2019ve loved working with for many years, and a character that I cannot escape from.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWarner Bros.\u00a0first announced\u00a0<\/a>\u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d in summer 2024 and originally said it would be ready for theaters in 2026. It then got delayed to December 2027. Serkis is directing the tentpole and once again starring in the title role, which he\u2019s been playing via motion capture since 2002\u2019s \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.\u201d Serkis\u2019 directorial efforts include \u201cMowgli: Legend of the Jungle\u201d and \u201cVenom: Let There Be Carnage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPeter Jackson, who directed \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d and \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d trilogies, is producing \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d with longtime \u201cRings\u201d collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Warner Bros. stressed when announcing \u201cGollum\u201d that the trio \u201cwill be involved every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBoyens previously told\u00a0Empire magazine<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d is \u201cquite an intense story\u201d that \u201cfalls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria. It\u2019s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.\u201d Original \u201cRings\u201d cast members like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have all expressed interest in returning for the new film should the story make sense for their characters to appear, although no additional casting has been confirmed.<\/p>\n
