Japanese architecture studio Vuild has designed an entirely-wooden stadium<\/a> to be the new home of Fukushima United FC in Fukushima<\/a>, Japan.<\/p>\n

Designed alongside the project’s client SportsX<\/a>, the two-tiered stadium will contain 5,000 seats sheltered by a continuous rippling roof.<\/p>\n

According to Vuild<\/a>, the stadium was designed to be “a symbol of hope and regeneration” for Fukushima following an earthquake and tsunami, and subsequent\u00a0nuclear disaster in 2011.<\/p>\n

\u202cWith this in mind, the stadium is planned to be built with participation from local residents as “a symbol of recovery”, said the studio.<\/p>\n

This process will involve the communal assembly of timber shells, trusses and external walls made from locally-sourced laminated timber that will compose the stadium’s four interconnected sections.<\/p>\n

“Each component will be designed for disassembly and reuse, supporting circular use of regional resources,” the studio said.<\/p>\n

“The fabrication and assembly will invite club members and local residents to participate in a festive, community-driven process.”<\/p>\n

The stadium will be organised across two stories that rise to a peak of 16-metres-tall.<\/p>\n

According to the studio, the design avoids classification as a fireproof structure due to each of the four sections encompassing less than 3,000 square metres.<\/p>\n

Facilities at ground level will include players’ areas and storage, while VIP areas, skyboxes and media areas will be contained above. The venue will also include hotel accommodation on the upper floor.<\/p>\n

Visuals of the stadium reveal an unassuming timber exterior that opens up to low-level seating crowned by intricate wooden structures.<\/p>\n

Alongside the rippled form of the roof, the facade geometry and orientation of the stadium were designed to minimise summer solar gain, capture prevailing winds in summer and protect against winds in winter.<\/p>\n

Additionally, a rainwater collection system will be introduced alongside other renewable systems to increase the project’s sustainability.<\/p>\n

“Through these renewable systems, the stadium aims to minimize energy consumption and achieve energy self-sufficiency by storing on-site generated renewable power,” Vuild said.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, photos show construction underway at Buffalo Bills stadium in New York<\/a> and plans for the UK’s “first all-electric football stadium” have been announced for Oxford United Football Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n
