An 18th-century painting looted by the Nazis more than 80 years ago has been unexpectedly recovered \u2014 after it was spotted in a real estate photo of the Argentina home of a Third Reich official\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n
The portrait of Contessa Colleoni by Italian artist\u00a0Giuseppe\u00a0Ghislandi hadn\u2019t been seen in public since it was stolen from Jacques Goudstikker, a Jewish art collector, in Amsterdam back in 1940.<\/p>\n
Then an online real estate listing in the coastal city of Mar del Plata changed all that.<\/p>\n

The painting unexpectedly exploded back into public view when senior Nazi official Friedrich Kadgien\u2019s daughter listed her villa\u00a0for sale last month \u2014 with the Italian masterpiece on full display in a living room.<\/p>\n
Eagle-eyed Dutch reporters tipped off authorities after spotting the artwork in the listing when they were investigating Kadgien\u2019s ties to Argentina.<\/p>\n
Kadgien was a senior official in Adolf Hitler\u2019s government who fled to South America from Germany after World War II. He died in 1979. <\/p>\n
Argentine cops last week raided\u00a0the villa \u2014 which is currently owned by Kadgien\u2019s daughter, Patricia Kadgien, and her husband \u2014 but weren\u2019t immediately able to locate the painting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had indications that the painting might be in this residence,\u201d Argentina federal prosecutor Carlos Martinez\u00a0said after the raid.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe painting wasn\u2019t in the house, but we seized some documents related to engravings and drawings that might provide context.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the moment, we have two individuals under investigation \u2014 owners of the property linked to possession of the painting,\u201d Martinez added at the time.<\/p>\n
The couple\u2019s lawyer later handed the iconic painting over to the prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Patricia Kadgien and her husband were placed under house arrest earlier this week as authorities probe whether they may have obstructed the effort to locate the painting.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t immediately clear what, if any, charges they could face. <\/p>\n
