Garmin states that it relies on &#8220;multiple roaming providers worldwide&#8221; and that most cell towers support LTE-M. The maps above show the 32 countries and territories where satellite messaging and SOS are supported, including &#8220;up to 50 miles offshore&#8221; for every country listed. Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.<\/p>\n<p>Any areas above 65\u00baN, such as Northern Canada, can&#8217;t get a satellite signal because &#8220;the satellite network will orbit below the horizon.&#8221; Even in eligible areas, trees or terrain can also block the signal in any area.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/wearables\/google-pixel-watch-4\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/wearables\/google-pixel-watch-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pixel Watch 4<\/a>, the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro will connect with Skylo satellites. Garmin says it&#8217;ll take about 30 seconds to establish a satellite connection, then about 10 seconds to send your queued messages, after which you&#8217;ll receive any messages queued from others.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Garmin&#8217;s dedicated InReach Messenger Plus, the Fenix 8 Pro can&#8217;t send voice messages or photos over satellite; you&#8217;ll need an LTE connection. For non-emergency satellite use, you pay $0.10 per check-in message or location update and $0.50 for full messages or weather requests.<\/p>\n<p>The higher-tier plans give you more complimentary photo\/ voice messages and unlimited location check-ins. But these new features come with noticeable trade-offs, aside from the higher price.<\/p>\n<p>The Fenix 8 Pro 47mm measures 16mm thick, or 2.2mm thicker than the Fenix 8 47mm; the 51mm Pro measures 16.5mm (a 1.8mm gap), while the 51mm Pro MicroLED hits a whopping 17.5mm thick.<\/p>\n<p>The Fenix 8 was already on the thick side for Garmin watches; now, the Pro lineup is significantly bulkier than nearly any fitness watch on the market, and likely won&#8217;t be especially comfortable for sleep tracking; you&#8217;ll probably want to get the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/wearables\/garmin\/garmin-index-sleep-monitor-comfortable-band-insightful-health-data-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/wearables\/garmin\/garmin-index-sleep-monitor-comfortable-band-insightful-health-data-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin Index Sleep Monitor<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the Fenix 8-to-8-Pro weight gap is negligible, so it won&#8217;t be less comfortable. And while MicroLEDs are hypothetically supposed to be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microled-info.com\/microled-vs-oled\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.microled-info.com\/microled-vs-oled\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more battery-efficient than OLEDs<\/a>, the Fenix 8 Pro&#8217;s real-life usage doesn&#8217;t reflect that.<\/p>\n<p>It seems the current upside to this new technology is the enhanced brightness, improved color gamut, and prevention of any AMOLED burn-in thanks to the lack of a backlight.
