An exclusive first look at the film, in theaters Jan. 16, promises an expansion of the franchise\u2019s dystopian universe, with more blood-soaked violence, and the rise of a cultlike figure in an England crawling with the infected. Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, the movie marks the fourth installment in the 28 Years series and a follow-up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/danny-boyle\/\" id=\"auto-tag_danny-boyle\" data-tag=\"danny-boyle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny Boyle<\/a>\u2019s recent 28 Years Later, also penned by Garland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDaCosta took the reins from Boyle only three weeks after his film wrapped last year, but says she wanted to infuse the story with her own sense of calamitous horror. \u201cThe thing that connects the two is that they\u2019re both bonkers, idiosyncratic, and very artistically personal works,\u201d DaCosta tells Rolling Stone. \u201cMy big pitch when I was talking to the producers, including Danny and Alex, before I came on was, \u2018I\u2019m going to make this my own. I\u2019m not going to try to make a Danny Boyle movie.\u2019 Because that\u2019s impossible to make. He\u2019s so special. And it didn\u2019t really interest me.\u201d DaCosta adds of her take, \u201cIt\u2019s so hard to describe the tone of the movie that I actually won\u2019t even attempt to. But it keeps the same unique, off-the-wall, surprising energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t28 Years Later: The Bone Temple picks up shortly after the events of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/28-years-later-review-danny-boyle-1235353364\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">28 Years Later<\/a>, which culminated with Spike (Alfie Williams) encountering Jack O\u2019Connell\u2019s Sir Jimmy Crystal and his gang of blond-haired, velour-suited Jimmies. The sequel follows Spike, whom DaCosta calls \u201cthe through line\u201d between the films, as he is forced to join Jimmy\u2019s violent cult, which is on a collision course with Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) and his Alpha virus-carrier Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThis film is the weird, deranged cousin to 28 Years Later, who you might be a bit ashamed of because they have weird, questionable interests,\u201d O\u2019Connell tells Rolling Stone. \u201cWe see how much nature is the unstoppable force at the end of the day. Nature prevails. The world will take its natural course with or without humans. But I don\u2019t think the infected are purely antagonists in our film. That plants an early seed for what he becomes. We\u2019re in an apocalyptic world, and evil and darkness are two of the forces that have been able to still exist, and he revels in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe adds of the introduction of the character in 28 Years Later, \u201cWhen we meet him, he\u2019s doing good. He seems to be doing something quite positive, but we definitely take him on a journey of twisted gaiety. That is what I was searching for when playing him: twisted gaiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDaCosta calls O\u2019Connell \u201ca wonder\u201d in the role: \u201cI love him. He is so excellent in this film. They include Emma Laird and Erin Kellyman. \u201cIt is strength in numbers and survival of the fittest type, so they\u2019re all ready to go and can handle themselves,\u201d O\u2019Connell explains. \u201cThey\u2019re all very warped but intriguing characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe film will feature more backstory on Dr. Kelson and more of his relationship with Samson, a vicious Alpha he regularly sedates but never tries to kill. In the trailer, which drops Wednesday, we see Kelson reach out to touch Samson, and DaCosta teases that their evolving dynamic is a \u201cbig part of the movie.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve seen Samson ripping people\u2019s heads off,\u201d she notes. \u201cBut Kelson\u2019s a kook, and he\u2019s doing what he wants to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShot entirely on location, The Bone Temple will also deepen our understanding of the virus\u2019 devastation around England. \u201cThe world expands,\u201d DaCosta says. \u201cWe get a glimpse of other types of the 28-years-later effect.\u201d And she promises the action will live up to the cover-your-eyes-scary scenes of 28 Years Later as well as the original series. \u201cAs a viewer, I love gore and body horror and visceral effects,\u201d she says. \u201cBut when I\u2019m directing it\u2019s more about what effect I want to create and what I want people to feel. And rest assured, he says of the film, \u201cIt goes places, man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDaCosta, who also helmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-lists\/best-movies-fall-2025-1235385697\/hedda-october-29-1235385844\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upcoming film Hedda<\/a> starring Tessa Thompson, recalls having 28 Days Later on DVD was she was 12. She says she\u2019s grateful for the opportunity to continue exploring the primal world created by Boyle and Garland in 2002. \u201cThe concept of the rage virus gives us the opportunity to really talk about humanity,\u201d DaCosta says. \u201cIn particular in this film, [it\u2019s about] the nature of evil and how we contextualize that in a world with a lot of belief systems that have been created in order to handle the meaninglessness of existence. That\u2019s one of my favorite things about this genre of film \u2014 it\u2019s the look at humanity and what we do to each other. In the film, we have the infected and we have people who aren\u2019t infected.
