{"id":13455,"date":"2025-07-16T05:42:03","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T05:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/13455\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T05:42:03","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T05:42:03","slug":"probe-of-uranus-finally-reveals-where-distant-planet-gets-its-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/13455\/","title":{"rendered":"Probe of Uranus finally reveals where distant planet gets its heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cheeky!<\/p>\n<p>A study has finally determined where Uranus gets its heat.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the University of Houston, led by Dr. Xinyue Wang, launched a deep probe of Uranus\u2019 data \u2014 and determined that the gas giant is actually warmed from the inside, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2025GL115660#https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2025GL115660\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published in Geophysical Research Letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a scientific perspective, this study helps us better understand Uranus and other giant planets,\u201d said Wang of UH\u2019s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in a <a href=\"https:\/\/uh.edu\/news-events\/stories\/2025\/july\/07142025-uranus-internal-heat-study.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36546836\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1989-image-provided-nasa-shows-108207605.jpg\" alt=\"Voyager 2 image of Neptune.\" class=\"wp-image-36546836\"  \/>Uranus\u2019 heat has been a mystery since NASA\u2019s Voyager 2 passed by the gaseous giant in 1986 and measured an incredibly low level. AP<\/p>\n<p>Any semblance of warmth on the sun\u2019s seventh planet \u2014 which has a surface temp of -320 degrees Fahrenheit \u2014 has been a mystery since a NASA analysis of Voyager 2 data in 1986 suggested the planet did not have internal heat. That conclusion was at odds with science\u2019s general understanding of how planets form and evolve.<\/p>\n<p>But the new study found that in fact Uranus generates 12.5% more heat internally than it receives from the sun, which is 1.8 billion miles away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means it\u2019s still slowly losing leftover heat from its early history, a key piece of the puzzle that helps us understand its origins and how it has changed over time,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n<p>Uranus is still behind planets such as Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune in terms of how much heat it emits.<\/p>\n<p>Those planets emit 100% more heat than they get from the sun.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.0332997;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36546835\" width=\"610\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-provided-esa-hubble-shows-108207606.jpg\" alt=\"Hubble Space Telescope image of Uranus' aurorae.\" class=\"wp-image-36546835\"  \/>The seventh planet from the Sun has been discovered to generate its own heat, contradicting previous conclusions from the Voyager 2 probe. AP<\/p>\n<p>The amount of heat emanating from Uranus varies by season \u2014 but those seasons can take more than 20 years, according to scientists.<\/p>\n<p>These long seasons could be the reason for the Voyager 2 readings in 1986, which may have been skewed by a surge in solar weather during the flyby, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/space.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Uranus may meanwhile soon have a moon that could house alien life, researchers have said.<\/p>\n<p>The planet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/30\/science\/uranus-moon-miranda-could-be-supporting-alien-life-scientists\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon, Miranda<\/a>, has sources of water hidden beneath its surface that could play a role in the expansion of humans through the solar system, according to a study from Johns Hopkins and the University of North Dakota.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cheeky!
