Ojeh survived for more than a year and a half after his diagnosis.<\/p>\n Jones had announced she was training for the 2023 New York City Marathon in August of that year, then crossed the finish line on Nov. 5, 2023. She told Guthrie that she learned of her husband\u2019s diagnosis a few weeks before she ran the 26.2-mile route. <\/p>\n \u201cLittle did I know that that marathon was going to set me up for a real one,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I ran the marathon, it was like, \u2018OK, one foot in front of the other, one breath at a time. Oh, my God, this is so hard \u2014 I can\u2019t take another step. Yes, you can.\u2019 … Who knew \u2014 it was like a template, a manual for what I was going to have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n Jones described sitting with her husband in his hospital room, looking out the window at the beautiful view of New York City as they had sat and gazed out at the campus\u2019 clock tower when they were in college together. <\/p>\n \u201cI remember staring out the window, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, my God,\u2019 it\u2019s like this crazy, full-circle moment,\u201d she said. \u201cHere we are again, not talking, and it feels like a beautiful nightmare. … It felt scary. It felt divine. It felt bigger than us.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, Jones said, she wouldn\u2019t have done it any other way. <\/p>\n \u201cI would look at him,\u201d she said, \u201cand I would say, \u2018I would do this all over again.\u2019 … I would look at him and I would say, \u2018This sucks,\u2019 and \u2018This is scary,\u2019 but if you asked me, if this was gonna be my fate, I would do it all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n As for managing her grief since his death, she said if she could just stay in bed and not answer the door and not answer the phone, it would be \u201camazing,\u201d but she has three kids depending on her to set the tone and be a model for them. <\/p>\n \u201cI want them to be proud of me. I want them to be proud of how I handled it. And so I kind of feel like I just have to keep running… Somehow I just keep running to my peace,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
