It drives me mad. It&#8217;s still alive even after 30, 40 years. It drives me crazy because it just isn&#8217;t true,\u2019 says Elliott.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">The primary aim of weight training, especially in mid-life, is to maintain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65123043\/kettlebell-workout-muscle-50s-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65123043\/kettlebell-workout-muscle-50s-menopause\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"build muscle\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">build muscle<\/a> mass at a time when you\u2019re much more susceptible to losing it due to the hormonal changes that come with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/female-health\/a709020\/perimenopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/female-health\/a709020\/perimenopause\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"perimenopause\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">perimenopause<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/sleep\/a65379798\/heart-health-menopause-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/sleep\/a65379798\/heart-health-menopause-sleep\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"menopause\" data-node-id=\"9.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">menopause<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Weight training will help protect you against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64688528\/nutrition-injury-risk-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64688528\/nutrition-injury-risk-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"injury\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">injury<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64651797\/coffee-prevents-frailty-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64651797\/coffee-prevents-frailty-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"frailty\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">frailty<\/a>, and hopefully keep you mobile much later down the line. It will keep you strong, not beef you up bodybuilder-style. Unless that\u2019s what you want, of course<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">To get really big through weight training, says Elliott, \u2018you\u2019d have to eat like a horse\u2019. \u2018Don\u2019t get me wrong, if you are eating loads and loads and loads of calories, potentially being in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a43467799\/calorie-surplus\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a43467799\/calorie-surplus\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"calorie surplus\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calorie surplus<\/a>, then weight training progressively over time could make you big,\u2019 he adds. \u2018But generally, the sorts of people that are getting bigger \u2013 females that are getting bigger quickly,\u2019 he says, \u2018it\u2019s not weight training that&#8217;s making them big.
