{"id":137491,"date":"2025-09-06T16:52:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T16:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/137491\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T16:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T16:52:10","slug":"news-netherlands-develops-ai-chatbot-for-financial-crime-investigators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/137491\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS: Netherlands develops AI chatbot for financial crime investigators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By PAUL O\u2019DONOGHUE, Senior Correspondent<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">OFFICIALS in the Netherlands have developed a new AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot to aid financial crime investigators.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands FIOD (Fiscal Information and Investigation Service) said that the tool enables law enforcement to quickly sort through large amounts of data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FIOD has conducted research into the ways that AI could contribute to criminal investigations,\u201d the organization said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiod.nl\/en\/fiod-publishes-english-translation-of-annual-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its 2024 annual report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne experiment involved a smart chatbot that assists with questions about investigative procedures. [It] offers interpretations of laws and regulations, and references relevant case law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency said it is also attempting to look at other ways of using AI to fight financial crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother experiment involves an AI tool that helps analyze large quantities of communication messages. These include seized phones and laptops,\u201d the FIOD said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tool can identify connections between messages that might be overlooked with a purely manual analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investigative toolkit will continue to be developed further over the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency added that AI tools allowed it to \u201cexamine the exponentially growing volume of seized data more quickly and effectively\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The FIOD is the latest in a string of European financial crime bodies which have started using AI.<\/p>\n<p>BaFin, Germany\u2019s Financial Intelligence Unit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlintelligence.com\/2025\/06\/news-germanys-bafin-starts-using-ai-to-identify-suspicious-transactions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made a similar announcement in June<\/a>. It said that it has started using AI to help it spot market abuse and suspicious patterns in trading.<\/p>\n<p>French officials have also started using AI. France uncovered \u20ac16.7 billion in fraud in 2024, double the amount detected five years ago. It said the rise was due in part to the \u201cincreased use of AI targeting\u201d during investigations.<\/p>\n<p>The FIOD\u2019s 2024 annual report also said the agency is increasingly focusing on digital investigations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital expertise is now essential to the investigative process,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FIOD employs many individuals who have made a career out of professional digital investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2024, for example, the FIOD acquired extensive specialist knowledge on tracing money flows through the blockchain.
