{"id":1375,"date":"2025-07-11T11:23:03","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/1375\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T11:23:03","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:23:03","slug":"rolling-stones-rocker-mick-taylor-stunned-to-learn-stolen-guitar-somehow-wound-up-at-met-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/1375\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolling Stones rocker Mick Taylor stunned to learn &#8216;stolen&#8217; guitar somehow wound up at Met Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a rock \u2019n\u2019 roll mystery \u2014 call it the case of the \u201cSticky Fingers!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mick Taylor \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2000\/09\/03\/the-stones-other-mick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">played with the Rolling Stones<\/a> from 1969 to 1974, and was inducted into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 1989 \u2014 was surprised to discover that a long-lost Les Paul guitar used on the band\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/05\/09\/the-making-of-the-rolling-stones-exile-on-main-street\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">1972 album \u201cExile on Main St.\u201d<\/a> recently resurfaced at the Met, we\u2019re told. <\/p>\n<p>The Stones\u2019 French villa was infamously robbed when they were holed up there nearly 54 years ago. <\/p>\n<p>A rock historian and Stones fan<a href=\"https:\/\/www.messynessychic.com\/2014\/12\/23\/then-and-now-the-rolling-stones-french-villa-of-debauchery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> said of the incident<\/a>: \u201cVilla Nellc\u00f4te was such an open house that, one day in September 1971, burglars walked out of the front gate with nine of [Keith] Richards\u2019 guitars, Bobby Keys\u2019 saxophone and Bill Wyman\u2019s bass in broad daylight .\u2009.\u2009.The crime was reputedly carried out by [drug] dealers from Marseille who were owed money by Richards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mick Taylor played with the Rolling Stones in the \u201960s and \u201970s. The Metropolitan Museum of Art <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/press-releases\/guitar-gift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced a \u201clandmark gift <\/a>of more than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitarmaking,\u201d including a \u201c1959 sunburst Les Paul guitar used by Keith Richards during the Rolling Stones\u2019 first appearance on \u2018The Ed Sullivan Show\u2019 in 1964,\u201d plus instruments used by Roy Rogers, Mississippi John Hurt and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Now Taylor\u2019s business manager and partner, Marlies Damming, says that Richards sold that same Les Paul to Taylor. <\/p>\n<p>Damming said via a statement: \u201cThere are numerous photos of Mick Taylor playing this Les Paul, as it was his main guitar until it disappeared. The interesting thing about these vintage Les Pauls (from the late 1950s), is that they are renowned for their flaming .\u2009.\u2009. which is unique, like a fingerprint.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A collection of guitars \u2014 including one Keith Richards played on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan\u201d show \u2014 was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Redferns<\/p>\n<p>A source added, \u201cTaylor says he never received compensation for the theft and is mystified as to how his property found its way into the Met\u2019s collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rep for the Met did not immediately comment, and an adviser for Dirk Ziff, the collector who made the donation, did not get back to us. <\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned!
