The day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/06\/sport\/tennis-us-open-womens-final-preview-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> final can change a tennis player\u2019s life, ending with a confetti-soaked celebration or lonely commiseration. Much of it is watched by the thousands inside Arthur Ashe Stadium and millions more on TV.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8hpib200033b6ngmdaevvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But off the court, the day is like any other at a grand slam tournament, governed by routines.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0002356nemxblyzb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On a day so outside the ordinary, routines take on an added importance. Despite the stakes involved, the day of a US Open final isn\u2019t hugely different from the day of any other grand slam match, said seven-time grand slam winner Mats Wilander. The routine is the same.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0003356n97f9r4gz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne big difference is you know what time you\u2019re playing,\u201d Wilander, who reached 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/mats-wilander\/w023\/player-activity?matchType=Singles&amp;year=1995&amp;tournament=GS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">grand slam finals<\/a> and won the 1988 US Open, told CNN Sports. \u201cUsually, it\u2019s a good time in the afternoon or early evening.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0004356nfhums42l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inevitably, different players have different routines, different responsibilities, different ways of keeping themselves occupied.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0005356neohu9q6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The day before Novak Djokovic won his record-breaking 23rd grand slam title at the 2023 French Open, he had \u201cparental duties\u201d and was spending time in nature with his two children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asapsports.com\/show_interview.php?id=188215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he told reporters afterward. <\/a>Coco Gauff spent the night before she won her first grand slam title at the 2023 US Open calling her boyfriend, just to take her mind off the enormity of the occasion,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asapsports.com\/show_interview.php?id=190805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> she said. <\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-1657981891.jpg\" alt=\"Novak Djokovic holds up the trophy after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 US Open men's singles final.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2097\" width=\"3145\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0006356n6eb7axhk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Snippets like this appear on the short-lived Netflix show \u201cBreak Point\u201d too. In one moment on the morning of the 2023 Wimbledon final, Nick Kyrgios\u2019 dad makes his son breakfast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0007356nkxs4r2hn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, there are commonalities for all the players. Both mind and body have to be prepared and kept in check. Three or four hours before the match, players will practice for around 45 minutes, with and without their racket, said Wilander.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0008356nwhxdqlgn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They will probably spend some time on a stationary bike, eat some sort of carbohydrate for lunch like pasta or rice, and then warm up again about an hour before they take to the court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh0009356n92hn3ukt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In between, players will often do something \u201cmindless\u201d like playing cards or doing drills that involve catching or juggling tennis balls to \u201cget the mind started,\u201d he added. Any tactical analysis of the other player\u2019s game is likely to have happened already.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000a356nly28fe9l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Focusing \u201chappens kind of automatically,\u201d Wilander said. \u201cYou start going through your routines in terms of warming up, and your brain starts focusing in on the process of playing the match. And it\u2019s the same process before the match, you\u2019re doing exactly the same thing before the finals.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000b356n7hw88agl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By the time the match actually starts, most players just can\u2019t wait to get on to the court. \u201cYou are waiting for it, you can\u2019t wait to start,\u201d three-time grand slam winner Aryna Sabalenka said after she won the 2023 Australian Open. \u201cYou\u2019re super excited \u2026 As soon as I step in on the court, I felt like, \u2018OK, I think I\u2019m in control and I\u2019m \u2026 emotionally ready for it.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000c356noeduz6sg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Until this point, the two finalists have likely had similar days, but as they play their  experiences, of course, start diverging. For one of them, it will be one of the best days of their life; for the other, it will be one of the most agonizing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000d356n3fc6h3s9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Almost every minute of their next few hours is broadcast to millions worldwide and soundtracked by the raucous crowd inside a cauldron-like Arthur Ashe Stadium.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000e356nr842tpxe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And immediately after the match, there is the post-match interview on court, the trophy presentation, as well as news conferences for both the winner and loser where the contrasting emotions are on display.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000f356nef0jaq66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you win, the next hour is probably one of the best hours that you have in your life as a tennis player because you\u2019re on such a high,\u201d Wilander said. \u201cYou can\u2019t go to sleep or anything for four or five hours.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-1671016332.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff reacts after defeating Aryna Sabalenka to win the 2023 US Open.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000g356nn9opgmx0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you\u2019ve lost, its back to the drawing board \u2026 losing is kind of rough \u2026 you might as well have lost earlier in the tournament is what it feels like.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000h356ntpaiukd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the 2023 US Open women\u2019s final, the Netflix cameras followed newly crowned champion Gauff off the court into the locker room where she bounced around, trophy in hand, filming the newly engraved wall of winners with her phone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf8e1udh000i356nwnt9jyrh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Runner-up Sabalenka, meanwhile, retreated to another area, smashed her racket until the frame buckled and sat with her back against the wall, next to the scratch marks left on the floor.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Facebook Tweet Email Link So often in life, the mundane and the extraordinary exist side-by-side.
