an independent bid<\/a> for mayor, said in the interview that Mamdani’s ideas may play well on social media, but in reality “they\u2019re all BS.\u201d<\/p>\n“I think the assemblyman would do damage to New York. Not just that I don’t agree. I believe it would actually damage New York. And I’ve been having this battle with the socialists for years,” he said.<\/p>\n
The other candidates in the race for mayor include Republican Curtis Sliwa and two other independent candidates \u2014 incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Jim Walden.<\/p>\n
Cuomo added that his campaign wasn\u2019t aggressive enough to help him secure the Democratic nominee seat.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was more, here are the problems, let\u2019s talk about the problems, affordability, public safety, here\u2019s how I\u2019m going to fix the problems,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there was no inspiration to it.\u00a0There wasn\u2019t enough positivity to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it was just, the campaign itself was just not good. Not good in aggressively communicating the affirmative, or frankly, debunking the simplicity of his solutions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Cuomo said Mamdani needs to show that he can follow through on the promises he\u2019s campaigning on, such as free buses and freezing rent\u00a0for the city\u2019s rent-stabilized tenants.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo these three-word slogans sound good, excellent on social media, but it\u2019s not reality. And a little bit, I was too wed in responsibility and reality. I would not say something that I couldn\u2019t get done, right?\u201d he said,\u00a0adding these promises\u00a0build \u201ccynicism about government.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI said I was going to do marriage equality because I believed I was going to be able to get it done. So to now throw out these three-word solutions: freeze the rent, build grocery stores. It\u2019s not an effective strategy in the campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m repulsed by it, you know? It\u2019s just not true.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former governor said socialists have opposed his ideas in the past, citing when he was pushing for Amazon to open up a headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe socialists opposed it and wind up killing it,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re anti-corporate, they\u2019re anti-business. New York is about business. There is no future for New York if you\u2019re going to be anti-business.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cuomo also said he would support whichever candidate is polling strongest against Mamdani as the November election nears.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if Eric Adams is stronger as a candidate, God bless him. I\u2019ll step aside. And vice versa.
