The new images showcase turbulent solar winds and merging eruptions with unprecedented clarity. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasas-parker-solar-probe-snaps-closest-ever-images-to-sun\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">These images<\/a> look simply amazing, but there\u2019s more to it than a close-up of the sun. Scientists hope the data they gather will refine their understanding of how the Sun shapes space weather and, by extension, life on Earth. These insights will also help us protect our space infrastructure, satellites most of all. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new data will help us vastly improve our space weather predictions to ensure the safety of our astronauts and the protection of our technology here on Earth and throughout the solar system,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universetoday.com\/articles\/this-is-the-closest-picture-ever-taken-of-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Nicky Fox, NASA\u2019s science mission director.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe is designed to do the unthinkable: \u201ctouch the Sun.\u201d Named after physicist Eugene Parker, who first theorized the solar wind in 1958, the spacecraft carries a suite of instruments shielded by cutting-edge thermal protection as it flies through the Sun\u2019s outer atmosphere (the corona) at record-breaking speeds of 430,000 miles per hour. Everything about this mission pushes science to its very edge. <\/p>\n<p>The images were snapped during Parker\u2019s December 24, 2024 flyby, but were released only a few days ago. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A Front-Row Seat to the Sun\u2019s Explosive Fury<\/p>\n<p>From the Earth\u2019s surface, the Sun seems serene. But zoom in just a little (or in this case, a lot) and it becomes a dynamic, sometimes violent, plasma machine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752658985_450_sun-gif-nasa.gif\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752658985_450_sun-gif-nasa.gif\" height=\"480\" width=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-287022 sp-no-webp\" alt=\"Images showing the sun's corona taken by Parker Solar Probe\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\"\/> <\/a>Parker probe traveling through the Sun\u2019s corona. Credit: NASA.<\/p>\n<p>The Parker Solar Probe\u2019s latest data includes the clearest images yet of the solar wind, the continuous stream of charged particles that blasts out of the corona. These particles can travel at over a million miles per hour, sometimes smashing into Earth\u2019s magnetic field and disrupting satellites, power grids, and communication networks.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have long known about these solar outflows. What they didn\u2019t have \u2014 until now \u2014 is a front-row seat to see them at the moment they\u2019re born.<\/p>\n<p>One of the striking discoveries is the structure of the heliospheric current sheet, a vast, spiraling boundary where the Sun\u2019s magnetic field flips direction. From Earth, this sheet looks like a faint beam of light. But up close, the Parker images revealed a swirling \u201ctwirling skirt\u201d of magnetic boundaries, much more complex than previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Earth orbits the sun, it dips in and out of the undulating current sheet. On one side the sun\u2019s magnetic field points north (toward the Sun), on the other side it points south (away from the Sun). South-pointing solar magnetic fields tend to cancel Earth\u2019s own magnetic field. Solar wind energy can then penetrate the local space around our planet and fuel geomagnetic storms,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/heliospheric-current-sheet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> NASA. <\/p>\n<p>Adding to the drama, the spacecraft witnessed a rare solar phenomenon in action: three coronal mass ejections (CMEs) exploding from the Sun in rapid succession and then combining into a single, more powerful wave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese successive events coming from the sun actually are the biggest threat to Earth in terms of space weather,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/science\/2025\/07\/15\/nasa-images-sun-solar-eruptions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Nour Rawafi, project scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. \u201cIt\u2019s basically giving you a front seat to see that happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/QxKMKSJfVASHkVJdLJP5fe-970-80.jpg.webp.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/QxKMKSJfVASHkVJdLJP5fe-970-80.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Coronal mass ejection images taken by Parker Solar Probe near the sun\" class=\"wp-image-287023\"  \/><\/a>Coronal mass ejection (yellow) forming on the Sun\u2019s corona. Credit: NASA. <\/p>\n<p>When one eruption clears the way, others can follow more quickly and with greater impact, like a convoy on a cleared highway. That convergence can trigger intense geomagnetic storms when they hit Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Probing the Origins of the Solar Wind<\/p>\n<p>For decades, one of the Sun\u2019s greatest mysteries has been how the solar wind \u2014 especially its slower, denser component \u2014 is generated and escapes the Sun\u2019s powerful gravity.<\/p>\n<p>This artist\u2019s concept shows a representative state of Earth\u2019s magnetic bubble immersed in the slow solar wind, which averages some 180 to 300 miles per second. They discovered that magnetic funnels on the Sun\u2019s surface seem to produce switchbacks. These are zigzagging magnetic field lines that flip direction like a coiled spring. Switchbacks are not rare. They\u2019re common, and they might explain how the fast solar wind gets its speed.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to the Sun, the corona no longer appears smooth and static but chaotic and irregular. The probe found that even the boundary of the corona is warped and unpredictable, further complicating the question of how solar material manages to escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big unknown has been: how is the solar wind generated, and how does it manage to escape the Sun\u2019s immense gravitational pull?\u201d said Rawafi. \u201cWith Parker Solar Probe, we\u2019re closer than ever to uncovering their origins and how they evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/hfyuugwkeCDtwcmh2tXSyj-1200-80.jpg.webp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/hfyuugwkeCDtwcmh2tXSyj-1200-80.jpg-1024x576.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-287026\"  \/><\/a>Illustration of the Parker Solar Probe. Credit: NASA. <\/p>\n<p>In May 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/northern-lights-visible-us-where-solar-storm-rcna151643\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a similar multi-eruption event<\/a> knocked out communications for commercial satellites and generated auroras visible far from the poles. With more spacecraft and crewed missions heading into space, forecasting these disruptions becomes mission-critical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the background solar wind will help us to predict when these events are going to arrive to Earth, how strong are they going to be and what is the likely activity that will drive in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere,\u201d Rawafi explained.<\/p>\n<p>A Mission Still Unfolding<\/p>\n<p>Each orbit brings the Parker Solar Probe closer to the Sun. And each pass returns data that deepens our grasp of the star that governs our solar system.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft, still healthy and operational, is expected to make its next daring dive in September 2025.
