Each weekday, catch up on the 5 most pressing stories to start your morning in 3 minutes or less.  <\/p>\n<p>Murals from Robert Vargas cover buildings all over Los Angeles \u2014 and the world.<\/p>\n<p>From his tribute to Shohei Ohtani in Little Tokyo, to his dedication to Altadena at <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/los-angeles-activities\/new-robert-vargas-mural-celebrating-altadena-debuts-today\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fair Oaks Burger<\/a>, the Boyle Heights native says he wants to give back to the community \u2014 and hopefully inspire more Latino kids to pursue a career in art.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the city of L.A. declared Sept. 8 as Robert Vargas Day.<\/p>\n<p>The renowned artist is celebrating by hosting a career day event for local kids and teens. For the last five years, he\u2019s invited other creatives who specialize in different mediums like music and dance to come out and show parents that a career in the arts is possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s why I think it&#8217;s so important for me to be visible and present in that space because I&#8217;m also an example to those parents\u2026 they get to see someone who grew up there who looks just like them,\u201d he said. &#8220;You can still persevere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LA artist Robert Vargas on his new mural and his bid to break a world record<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A Latino man sits at a round table, wearing a white t-shirt, multi-color printed pants and a blue baseball hat, speaking into a microphone. County High School for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of amazing talent that&#8217;s coming out of those areas and specifically in Boyle Heights,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really a special place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vargas has also been keeping busy with his own career. He recently unveiled a new three-story-tall mural at Project Angel Food in Hollywood called \u201c<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DN63oF-jys0\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nourishing the Community.<\/a>\u201d He said it was inspired by the people working in the kitchen and those who serve in the community.<\/p>\n<p>He even incorporated a woman who is a vendor nearby and used her hands in the mural for the centerpiece, which Vargas described as \u201clike a matriarchal goddess of corn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t really make sketches leading up to a mural,\u201d he said. \u201cI kind of immerse myself in that space, have conversations with people around me, and let that inform my process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The piece took about a week to complete, with Vargas working nonstop overnight to complete it in time for a community unveiling ceremony. It also just happened to be a heatwave, which presented its own challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water-based paint dries pretty much on contact. So I went through tons of brushes,\u201d he said. \u201cThe wall&#8217;s like a stove top, and I&#8217;m up high, closer to the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vargas is also working on a new piece in downtown L.A. at 5th and Hill streets \u2014 his \u201copus mural\u201d that could break a Guinness World Record. It will stand at 60,000-plus square feet and is being painted all freehand \u2014 no grids or projections.<\/p>\n<p>The mural is called \u201cAngelus,\u201d combining the words \u201cangel\u201d and \u201cus.\u201d Vargas said it\u2019s a tribute to Angelenos and that it incorporates contemporary people, to help tell \u201cour story of today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s a responsibility as an artist to comment on the times and use your work for the greater,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/people\/gillian-moran-perez\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gillian Mor\u00e1n P\u00e9rez<\/a> contributed to this story.<\/p>\n<p>                                    <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Keep up with LAist.
