CBS News first reported the news.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd65372x0002356n8uja22hn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump later Wednesday told reporters at the White House it is unlikely he would fire Powell, pushing back on media reports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd65sjgd000g356nr73b5372@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re not planning on doing anything,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI don\u2019t rule out anything, but I think it\u2019s highly unlikely, unless he has to leave for fraud.\u201d The dollar index pared its losses after Trump\u2019s remarks and was down just 0.3% as of midday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5k470o0000356n1kt462ec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Fed\u2019s independence is a cornerstone of US financial markets, and perceptions of an erosion of that independence could spark a sharp sell-off in the dollar and US government bonds that could have lasting damage for America\u2019s markets and its economy \u2014 along with its international reputation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd646trd0000356n02lt86ee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US markets have been volatile this year as Trump has ramped up his criticisms of Powell, demanding the central bank lower interest rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd64f6t60001356nsiah3yu5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Wall Street has maintained that the likelihood of the president actually moving to oust the Fed chair remains low, due to legal uncertainties and awareness of officials like Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that markets would reject the move.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5wa00p0000356ndmdqzzpd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTrump wants lower interest rates: He thinks ousting Powell will make a difference, but most market analysts think it would send a signal that the Fed has lost its independence,\u201d Greg Valliere, chief US policy strategist at AGF Investments, said in a note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bhnfk0005356n4zz2f7t3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Fed\u2019s independence is paramount. Financial markets favor independent central banks that can focus on inflation and the labor market without concerns of political interference. Investors perceive the United States as a great place to invest specifically because of the nation\u2019s strong institutions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bixg7000d356n9mz7pdlh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A breakdown in the perception of Fed independence is the equivalent of enormous reputation damage that could be almost impossible to repair.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5i39lw0000356nndbwaicr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Markets in recent days have not been \u201cpricing in\u201d the possibility of Powell\u2019s removal, analysts say, which leaves room for a severe reaction in markets if Trump catches investors off-guard and goes forward with a legally contentious move to assert control over the Fed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd64bl880004356n07n4zmjp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            George Saravelos, global head of FX strategy at Deutsche Bank, said in a Friday note that the removal of Powell is \u201cone of the largest under-priced event risks\u201d for markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5z3t7k0000356niv7a8zba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is stating the obvious that investors would likely interpret such an event as a direct affront to Fed independence, putting the central bank under extreme institutional duress,\u201d Saravelos said. \u201cWith the Fed sitting at the pinnacle of the global dollar monetary system it is also stating the obvious that the consequences would reverberate far beyond US borders.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5zejk30005356nc8xq6wer@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Saravelos said he expects the dollar would drop 3% to 4% in 24 hours if Powell were fired, which is an enormous move in currency markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5ik13r0000356n1d8hzzq3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe empirical and academic evidence on the impact of a loss of central bank independence is fairly clear: In extreme cases, both the currency and the bond market can collapse as inflation expectations move higher, real yields drop and broader risk premia increase on the back of institutional erosion,\u201d Saravelos said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5zh8wt000c356nwqgky040@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bets on <a href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/event\/will-trump-remove-jerome-powell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Polymarket<\/a> on Wednesday showed traders expect a 24% chance Trump will fire Powell this year, which is the highest percentage since the bet was created at the end of last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bhvol000a356nezx5mpx6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An assault on the Fed\u2019s independence could cause a flight from American assets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5wm374000q356ngsvqjacw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US dollar\u2019s strength and premier status could be jeopardized if investors lose the perception that the Fed is independent, according to Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bk4ea000j356nbri5shn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAn independent Fed is a key foundation of the dollar\u2019s reserve currency appeal,\u201d Pesole said. \u201cMarkets hold a currency as reserve when they have long-term expectations that inflation will be under control and the bond market will work smoothly. In the case of the dollar this is fundamentally guaranteed by the Fed being independent from politics.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bm9d2000p356n8ihvsegd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo should markets interpret any changes at the helm of the Fed as a loss of that independence, the incentive to hold dollars will be diminished,\u201d Pesole said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5ymggp0000356n88108mrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The dollar in May hit a three-year low after Trump levied a flurry of criticisms against Powell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd64diti0000356nygzoi0pj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bond markets could also be rocked by an erosion of Fed independence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5ilitt000g356nu1kjuhml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 30-year Treasury yield on Tuesday rose above 5% for the first time since June. A sustained, continued rise in yields could send a signal that markets are pushing back on the Trump administration\u2019s attacks on Powell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5z1k8u0000356nuwp1g2qs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bond prices and yields trade in opposite direction. A rise in yields could signal investors are selling or refusing to buy US bonds and demanding higher rates to compensate for the perceived added risk of holding US debt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5zewvw0009356nm5r6v05r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt a minimum, we would expect a sustained and persistent risk premium to be subsequently embedded in both the US dollar and the Treasury market, with exceptionally high sensitivity to both the mix of data and the conduct of monetary policy in the subsequent months,\u201d Deutsche Bank\u2019s Saravelos said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd63b15t0000356nosfysiw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Damage to the Fed\u2019s credibility could make inflation a more persistent issue. Investors think members of Trump\u2019s own Cabinet would even advise against such a move.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5i5ixj0004356nvbg0nmu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe doubt that Trump will actually try to fire Powell on this basis with Bessent likely warning of the mayhem this would cause in markets, and serious doubts the Supreme Court would uphold the decision,\u201d Krishna Guha, vice chairman at Evercore ISI, said in a note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5ythbd000c356nhglwai69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Supreme Court thus far has signaled it would uphold the Fed chair\u2019s position other than a \u201cfor cause\u201d removal, \u201cwhich is interpreted in legal terms as narrowly related to misconduct,\u201d and not \u201cpolicy disagreements,\u201d according to Guha.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5ik3ui0002356nnhypwv3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House in recent days has been ramping up its criticisms of the Fed\u2019s ongoing construction project to renovate the central bank\u2019s headquarters in Washington, DC, effectively building a potential \u201cfor cause\u201d case for firing Powell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5yuxi7000l356ngdvtbw3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Senior Trump administration officials Director of the Office of Management and Budget Russell Vought and Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency Bill Pulte have turned up the heat on criticizing the Fed\u2019s building renovation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5zncwe0000356nhxq46npf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A reporter on Tuesday asked Trump if Powell\u2019s handling of the renovation was a fireable offense. \u201cI think it sort of is,\u201d Trump said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5zozyn0007356n3iuny9zj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Powell has asked the central bank\u2019s inspector general to conduct an additional review of the ongoing renovation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/14\/economy\/powell-federal-reserve-renovation-inspector-general\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN previously reported<\/a>. The Fed also published a lengthy FAQ on its website, detailing the minutiae of the renovations and clarifying that cost overruns were due to factors including \u201cmore asbestos than anticipated\u201d and \u201ca higher-than-expected water table,\u201d along with rising costs due to inflation and necessary changes to the building designs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5weobk0007356n05p1n1z8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have not the slightest doubt that Powell will resist this line of attack as firmly as he has resisted others to date,\u201d Guha said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5yuij1000i356nkip7x0yd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While it remains to be seen whether Trump would fire Powell, the very suggestion that he might could send jitters through markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd5bgehg0000356nxeeiksdx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Fed is a unique institution.
