{"id":144588,"date":"2025-09-09T17:39:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T17:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144588\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T17:39:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T17:39:08","slug":"steven-spielberg-heaps-praise-on-one-battle-after-another-leo-dicaprio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144588\/","title":{"rendered":"Steven Spielberg Heaps Praise on One Battle After Another, Leo DiCaprio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/steven-spielberg\/\" id=\"auto-tag_steven-spielberg\" data-tag=\"steven-spielberg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Spielberg<\/a> is a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/one-battle-after-another\/\" id=\"auto-tag_one-battle-after-another\" data-tag=\"one-battle-after-another\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Battle After Another<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe legendary filmmaker heaped praise on director Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon\u2019s novel after an advance screening in Los Angeles this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring a post-screening panel discussion, Spielberg revealed he had already seen the film three times. One Battle After Another stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a paranoid, washed-up revolutionary who sets off in search of his missing daughter (Chase Infiniti). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhat an insane movie, oh my God,\u201d said Spielberg, as <a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/steven-spielberg-praises-paul-thomas-andersons-one-battle-after-another-what-an-insane-movie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported by<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/steven-spielberg-praises-paul-thomas-andersons-one-battle-after-another-what-an-insane-movie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Film Stage<\/a>. \u201cThere is more action in the first hour of this than every other film you\u2019ve ever directed put together. Everything, it is really incredible. This is such a concoction of things that are so bizarre and at the same time so relevant, that I think have become\u00a0increasingly\u00a0more relevant than perhaps even when you finished the screenplay and assembled your cast and crew and began production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpielberg also compared the film to Stanley Kubrick\u2019s 1964 black comedy classic Dr. Strangelove. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI have not seen a movie that is so tonally a relative to Stanley Kubrick\u2019s\u00a0Dr. Strangelove,\u201d he said. \u201cThis brings a kind of absurdist comedy, taken very seriously, because it\u2019s so much a reflection of what\u2019s happening today, every day, throughout this country. But it takes it to a point where you want to laugh, because if you don\u2019t laugh, you\u2019re going to start screaming, \u2018This is too real.\u2019 And so you got that outlet. Kubrick used armageddon as a way to tell his story, to make his statement. And there\u2019s something that gets us on the same edge of that kind of absurdist feeling, a tone, that you take it both very seriously, but you\u2019re praying for some kind of relief, some kind of a trigger to laugh. I nervously laugh all the way through\u00a0Dr. Strangelove, and, more than nervously, I had a great time laughing all the way through this\u2026 may this movie make a bundle and make you very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpielberg and Anderson also bonded over working with DiCaprio, who Spielberg directed in 2002\u2019s Catch Me If You Can. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhen you said \u2018cut,\u2019 did Leo rush to the monitor to watch his own take back every day?\u201d Spielberg asked Anderson, who agreed that \u201csometimes\u201d the actor did just that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cLeo has a great thing,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cHe will sell you on something by saying, \u2018This is a terrible idea, and you\u2019re gonna hate it.\u2019 And then he proceeds to tell you a really fantastic idea. But he loves to set it up by saying, \u2018I think it\u2019s a terrible idea.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHe always does that,\u201d Spielberg concurred. \u201c\u2026And it was amazing watching him in this, both of them. I have to say about Sean Penn: This is my favorite Sean Penn performance of his career for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDiCaprio had been wanting to work with Anderson for decades, with the actor having previously had to turn down 1997\u2019s\u00a0Boogie Nights because he was committed to making Titanic. The actor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/leonardo-dicaprio-boogie-nights-biggest-regret-1236343787\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has called<\/a>\u00a0passing on the film as his \u201cbiggest regret.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cAny time that he asks, you work with P.T.A., this guy is like one of the great visionary filmmakers of my generation,\u201d DiCaprio recently told The Hollywood Reporter. \u201cHis films, I\u2019m still intrigued by to this day; I still talk about\u00a0The Master,\u00a0Boogie Nights,\u00a0There Will Be Blood,\u00a0Magnolia\u00a0\u2014 these films that are going to last for generations to come so you jump at an opportunity to work with Paul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOfficial critic reviews for the Warner Bros. film \u2014 which clocks in at nearly three hours \u2014 are not yet out.
