{"id":144729,"date":"2025-09-09T18:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144729\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T18:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:55:12","slug":"cape-cod-shark-activity-popping-off-as-lifeguards-are-gone-for-season-white-shark-spotted-20-yards-off-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144729\/","title":{"rendered":"Cape Cod shark activity popping off as lifeguards are gone for season, white shark spotted 20 yards off beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mass of beachgoers and eagle-eyed lifeguards are now gone from the Cape, but white shark season is only starting to peak.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the message from shark researchers and public safety officials, as some people still head to the beach during the final days of summer.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticwhiteshark.org\/sharktivity-app\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\u2019s Sharktivity app<\/a> was popping off with shark alerts over the weekend, with apex predators being spotted close to shore.<\/p>\n<p>One great white shark, for instance, was seen only 20 yards off Truro\u2019s Longnook Beach. Each summer and fall, sharks hunt for seals close to shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re heading to the beach to take advantage of the quieter times now that summer crowds are gone, you still need to be \u2018Shark Smart\u2019 because the sharks are still here,\u201d shark researcher John Chisholm posted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDownload the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy #Sharktivity app to stay informed,\u201d added Chisholm, who\u2019s an adjunct scientist at the New England Aquarium.<\/p>\n<p>While shark bites on humans are rare, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2018\/09\/16\/aunt-implored-cape-shark-attack-victim-please-dont-go\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatal incident occurred in Wellfleet in September of 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As shark activity remains high in September and October, Cape Cod National Seashore is reminding beachgoers that lifeguard services have ended for the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe aware sharks hunt for seals in shallow water,\u201d Cape Cod National Seashore wrote about staying \u201cShark Smart\u201d this fall. \u201cAvoid areas where seals are present. Stay close to shore. Swim, paddle, kayak, and surf with others\u2014never alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvoid murky or low-visibility water,\u201d the Seashore added. \u201cIn emergencies, call 911.
