{"id":144953,"date":"2025-09-09T21:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T21:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144953\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T21:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T21:00:08","slug":"canada-israel-davis-cup-matches-in-halifax-closed-to-fans-due-to-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/144953\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada-Israel Davis Cup matches in Halifax closed to fans due to safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The Davis\u00a0Cup matchup\u00a0between Canada and Israel will be held in a closed venue without spectators this week in Halifax due to safety concerns, Tennis Canada announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said in a news release the decision was made in consultation with the International Tennis Federation due to &#8220;escalating safety concerns&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;intelligence received from local authorities and national security agencies.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were forced to conclude that playing behind closed doors was the only way to both safeguard those involved and preserve the event itself,&#8221; the release read.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to close the Davis Cup World Group I tie\u00a0to fans comes after more than 400 Canadian athletes and academics, including Olympic runner Moh Ahmed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/tennis\/moh-ahmed-letter-davis-cup-tie-canada-israel-1.7611710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">urged Tennis Canada in a letter<\/a>\u00a0to cancel the event\u00a0over Israel&#8217;s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The letter cited scholars and human rights groups who have described those actions as genocide against the Palestinian people.\u00a0The Gaza Health Ministry says nearly 63,000 Palestinian combatants and civilians <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/israel-gaza-city-offensive-trump-1.7627603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In its response, Tennis Canada said\u00a0it &#8220;acknowledges the ongoing and deeply complex situation in the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No one from the organization was immediately available for an interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Safety &#8216;paramount,&#8217; says tennis federation<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A spokesperson for the International Tennis Federation,\u00a0the sport&#8217;s global governing body, said it shared Tennis Canada&#8217;s disappointment over closing the venue but emphasized safety as the priority.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The safety of all players, supporters and tournament staff is always paramount, and Tennis Canada considered a range of detailed security advice before coming to this decision,&#8221; the federation\u00a0said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The tie, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was initially to be played at Scotiabank Centre.\u00a0The matches will be livestreamed.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets were still available through Ticketmaster on Tuesday morning but sales were shut down by noon local time. (Giuliana Grillo de Lambarri\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Some Halifax residents have planned a &#8220;March for Palestine&#8221;\u00a0to coincide with this week&#8217;s tie.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">El Jones, an activist and one of the organizers of the march, said in an interview on Tuesday that the decision to close the venue &#8220;shows how community pressure has been very successful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;While obviously we continue to insist that this match be cancelled, it shows that there was no appetite in this community for supporting genocide and sportswashing,&#8221; said Jones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a news release, the\u00a0Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said the protesters were silencing thousands of Canadian tennis fans\u00a0from cheering on their national team.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It is unacceptable that hate, harassment, and intimidation have made it unsafe to support our athletes in our own country,&#8221; said Noah Shack, the CEO of the group which advocates for Jewish federations across Canada.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Our political leaders must decide whether we are a nation governed by peace, order, and good government \u2014 or one where fear and intimidation dictate our way of life.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Halifax pulls funding<\/p>\n<p>In August, the Halifax council had approved $50,000 in funding for the matches at the Scotiabank Centre as it is considered a tourism event, despite protesters opposing the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A city spokesman told CBC News in an email on Tuesday that the funding has been cancelled\u00a0because the event no longer delivers &#8220;the tourism, economic and other benefits that would have been expected had it proceeded as originally planned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Andy Fillmore urged fans who already booked hotels and flights to still come to Halifax and cheer on Team Canada from their hotel rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Fillmore said he was not a part of the decision to close the event to spectators, adding that he has &#8220;complete faith in the security system&#8221; at Events East, which manages and operates the Scotiabank Centre.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Events East said its public safety plan for the event will remain in place and fully enforced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any time that we host an international event, there is always an added layer of protocol and preparedness that comes into play,&#8221; said Dawn Delaney.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Halifax Regional Police said it was not involved in Tennis Canada&#8217;s decision to close the venue and it is not one of the &#8220;local authorities&#8221; referenced in the organization&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Davis\u00a0Cup matchup\u00a0between Canada and Israel will be held in a closed venue without spectators this week in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":144954,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[72],"tags":[99,428],"class_list":{"0":"post-144953","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-sports","9":"tag-tennis"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/144953","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=144953"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/144953\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/144954"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=144953"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=144953"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=144953"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
