{"id":145088,"date":"2025-09-09T22:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T22:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/145088\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T22:16:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T22:16:07","slug":"michigan-has-recycled-weight-of-10-mackinac-bridges-and-new-program-aims-for-even-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/145088\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan has recycled weight of 10 Mackinac Bridges, and new program aims for even more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SVQC2H4DCJC6ZHURY5KYGN57RM\">FLINT, MI \u2014 A new hands-on recycling education initiative aims to benefit 100,000 elementary school-age children annually in Genesee County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HMJDYN6DPFHKJHIAXJGBXIWUXY\">The move comes as momentum for recycling reached an all-time high in the state of Michigan in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3TQIBBKRBZGXLF55IWBQDFQ7SM\">The initiative aims to keep kids engaged at the Flint Farmers\u2019 Market through two interactive approaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KPLGRADSERBJ5LSIV6R66JRD7I\">Leaders with the Flint Farmers\u2019 Market, Flint Children\u2019s Museum and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) joined together on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the market for the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HFAN5THVJJAAJERCGFPMSP7ZSY\">\u201cOur partnership demonstrates the Flint Farmers\u2019 Market and EGLE\u2019s commitment to meeting communities where they are, using creative partnerships to extend the reach and impact of environmental education beyond traditional classroom or office settings,\u201d said Flint Farmers\u2019 Market Manager Karianne Martus. \u201cBy embedding educational activities within a high-traffic community gathering space, the partnership ensures that recycling education reaches families in a natural, accessible setting where learning can happen alongside everyday activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XWUMQMGAMZGKPAWF65MZCZXHAA\">The collaboration leverages the Flint Farmers\u2019 Market\u2019s reach\u2014500,000 annual visitors, including more than 100,000 kids between ages 2 to 10 across its three-day operations each week \u2014 to deliver hands-on environmental education through the Flint Children\u2019s Museum\u2019s interactive space within the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4NSRS65WDVERVIUO43LZM3AXTA\">Fourth graders from Eisenhower Elementary School sat in the front two rows, before dispersing throughout the market to interact and learn with chaperones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ED5LH3BI3FHS5J6CD5SW36SUWA\">The activities in the market feature two key interactive components designed to make recycling education engaging and memorable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IENTMSANHVFPHGQNLJVJLVF7FY\">The first activity is a recycling scavenger hunt featuring recycling stream categories with corresponding images of \u201cRecycling Raccoon,\u201d with the goal of teaching essential recycling rules, including proper cleaning, keeping items loose and cardboard flattening. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MKOWGW2ZPNDVHMEW2IIHIT57LM\">The second activity is a magnetic sorting game featuring a custom magnetic table surface with 3D printed game pieces representing various recyclable and non-recyclable items. With this hands-on sorting activity, it reinforces proper recycling practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D3GNEVNUCZFKZP4AGWI5T6URDE\">\u201cBy placing recycling education within the vibrant, family-friendly environment of the Flint Farmers Market, EGLE and the Flint Children\u2019s Museum are making sustainable practices more accessible and engaging for families throughout the region,\u201d said Jacky Metcalfe, Flint Children\u2019s Museum visitor services manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C2XKB62MBNCLBKCRJCVHKGYXD4\">EGLE announced this year that the recycling rate in Michigan is at a record high, based on 2024 metrics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IGNTLED72RAQPOG3WMDBYGUXHU\">EGLE leaders attribute the state\u2019s recycling success to its launch of the national award-winning \u201cKnow It Before You Throw It\u201d education campaign featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/recyclingraccoons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Recycling Raccoon Squad<\/a>, as well as EGLE funding for infrastructure and technical support for projects increasing access to recycling services across Michigan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XD243HNZ5BDUFFJQUW7TOASU4Q\">EGLE research shows Michigan has steadily increased its recycling rate from 14.25% before 2019, when Michigan ranked among the nation\u2019s lowest in recycling before the Recycling Raccoon campaign began, to 23% last year and an all-time high rate of over 25% now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YYWL2MRVPZG2JDEV3DHRQWAZ3I\">EGLE forecasts Michigan is on track to achieve the state\u2019s goal of a 30% recycling rate by 2029. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UXII3NA7ZBBBNKGSZQDZRJVZY4\">In the 2024 fiscal year, Michiganders recycled more than 71,000 tons of glass, 329,000 tons of paper and paper products and 56,000 tons of plastics and plastic products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LIHFQDNVBZHXZG5S3DIRY7UF3E\">The total amount of residential recycled materials reported for 2024\u2019s fiscal year was 723,174 tons \u2014 exceeding the year before by more than 19,000 tons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7D3BAKCJCBHZHIW3D7GSAXWZZY\">This equates to every person in Michigan recycling nearly 143 pounds of cardboard boxes, milk cartons, soup cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, food waste and other recyclable materials over a 12-month span.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EVIW4I5MTFF7VAF2K76WTWQDXI\">The volume of materials Michiganders recycled in the 2024 fiscal year equals the weight of 10 Mackinac Bridges and would fill the football stadiums of the Detroit Lions, University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as well as the hockey stadium of NCAA men\u2019s national champion Western Michigan University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FOJ7OD74EZBC5BNAN2L565FSSY\">EGLE\u2019s funding support of the Flint Farmers\u2019 Market children\u2019s recycling education builds on EGLE\u2019s successful partnership with the City of Flint last year to launch the largest distribution of rolling, easy-to-use carts curbside recycling and trash carts in the city\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ER5JMUJFCVBKRNDSIQ2RATNH2Q\">The delivery of nearly 70,000 free carts to more than 34,000 Flint households is projected to increase recycled materials from 624 tons per year to 5,400 tons annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FMAVLNBOU5DLJGH3R23ZE5QRZY\">\u201cBy increasing our recycling rate, we not only conserve natural resources but also generate significant economic benefits, supporting over 72,500 jobs and injecting billions of dollars into our economy,\u201d said EGLE Environmental Justice Public Advocate Regina Strong. \u201cEvery bottle, box, and can we recycle brings us one step closer to a sustainable Michigan where both the environment and our communities thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
