Island Health is offering tips on how families can stay physically and mentally well this fall.<\/p>\n
The health authority says children should practice coughing or sneezing in their elbow, refrain from touching their face with unwashed hands, and refrain from sharing food or drinks.<\/p>\n
\u201cHandwashing remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness in schools,\u201d continues the press release. <\/p>\n
Mental well-being is also key for a successful school year, according to Island Health.<\/p>\n
Tips for parents and caregivers are to have open communication with children, create a calm environment, spend time outdoors and stay physically active.<\/p>\n
It also suggests starting consistent routines with bedtime, meals and doing homework.<\/p>\n
With the spread of measles reported here in B.C., Island Health is also encouraging parents to make sure their children\u2019s vaccines and immunizations are up to date.<\/p>\n
According to Island Health, one in 10 people who have measles end up in hospital. <\/p>\n
