The Sideline with Andy Katz<\/a>,\u201d Cronin said his opposition is rooted in preserving fairness and integrity in a sport already undergoing significant changes.<\/p>\nDiscussing the idea of shifting from halves to quarters, Cronin dismissed the reasoning often used to support the change.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see any argument for quarters,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen your argument is, \u2018Well, that\u2019s what everybody else does,\u2019 okay. Well, if Steve Jobs (had) thought that, the world would be different.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stressed that any alteration should only be considered if it benefits college basketball.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it better for men\u2019s college basketball? That\u2019s all we should be asking ourselves anytime we decide on anything,\u201d Cronin said.<\/p>\n
On whether the ball should be advanced late in games, as in the NBA, Cronin was even more direct.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. Or if you want entertainment, go to the movies,\u201d he said. He noted that the NBA made adjustments to boost scoring and promote stars but rejected the idea that such motivations should drive changes in the college game. \u201cDon\u2019t change it for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, addressing the use of a coach\u2019s challenge, Cronin said it must be handled with caution.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou better save it. That\u2019s how I look at that. You know it\u2019s just like timeouts, right? You better save it,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
He pointed out how impactful a single challenge can be, particularly in late-game situations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt could be the difference in your best player fouling out of a game or not. So I think you got to save it for significance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Cronin also expressed frustration with the limits now placed on officials in the final minutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve now eliminated the guys going, the officials being able to go to the monitor and get the out-of-bounds call right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the value in correcting mistakes, he argued that the change has created new problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe problem is when they don\u2019t call a foul. The guy fouls me and it\u2019s off my fingertip. They didn\u2019t call it. And the old school refs, they didn\u2019t want to call the foul, so they just gave you the ball back. Now you go to the monitor, it\u2019s out on me. So you got to call every foul.\u201d<\/p>\n
