You might think of normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/green-tech\/a65873788\/oxgen-breathing-crystal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:crystals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">crystals<\/a> as \u201cspace crystals,\u201d meaning their structural lattice repeats in 3D space. However, time crystals (as the name suggests) is similarly well-organized but across time, moving and transforming in a repeating cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek first proposed the idea of time crystals back in 2012, and since then, scientists and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2021\/11\/time-crystal-quantum-computer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:quantum computers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">quantum computers<\/a> alike have constructed various types of time crystals in order to understand their mind-bending properties. Now, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder (UC Boulder) have achieved a new milestone: They\u2019ve created a time crystal you can actually see with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/solar-system\/a33241831\/how-to-see-neowise-naked-eye-comet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:naked eye;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">naked eye<\/a>\u2026 at least, under certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a new study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41563-025-02344-1&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.popularmechanics.com%2Fscience%2Fa66016732%2Ftime-crystal-visible%2F\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nature Materials;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link  rapid-with-clickid etailiffa-link\">Nature Materials<\/a>, co-authors Hanqing Zhao and Ivan Smalyukh filled glass cells with liquid crystals (a similar material to what\u2019s found in a television\u2019s LCD panels), which consisted of rod-shaped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a65677386\/when-you-die-a-psychedelic-molecule-shapes-your-final-moments-of-consciousness-a-new-theory-suggests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:molecules;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">molecules<\/a> that behave like a solid and also a little bit like a liquid. These liquid crystals are sandwiched between two plates of glass coated with a photoresponsive dye, and light polarizes the dye, exerting pressure on the crystal and creating a complex series of interactions that repeat over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/today\/2025\/09\/05\/physicists-have-created-new-time-crystal-it-wont-power-time-machine-could-have-many\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:press statement from UC Boulder;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">press statement from UC Boulder<\/a>, the effect is a bit like a big ballroom dance in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/authors-writers\/jane-austen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jane Austen;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jane Austen<\/a> novel, with partners splitting off and dancing around the room before eventually rejoining. But in this case, the Pride &amp; Prejudice dance display usually plays out on the microscopic level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cEverything is born out of nothing. All you do is shine a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a44882189\/350-year-old-theorem-explains-light\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:light;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">light<\/a>, and this whole world of time crystals emerges,\u201d Smalyukh said in a press statement. \u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of this time crystal. You just create some conditions that aren\u2019t that special. You shine a light, and the whole thing happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The resulting effect was a repeating wave\u2014stripes repeating one after the other\u2014that lasted for hours even when subjected to different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a44651050\/ocean-temperatures-crack-100-degrees-off-the-coast-of-florida\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:temperature;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">temperature<\/a> and light conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">All of this comes with a big \u201cso what?\u201d question attached. It\u2019s great that we\u2019ve discovered a phase of matter that spontaneously breaks time-translation symmetry, but what exactly does that mean for future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/energy\/a65625500\/evapoelectricity-evaporation-energy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:breakthroughs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">breakthroughs<\/a>? Well, UC Boulder notes that future technologies could create more elaborate patterns by stacking time crystals, creating a novel method of storing data. More practically, time crystals could be used as an anti-counterfeiting technology.
