{"id":148707,"date":"2025-09-11T10:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/148707\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T10:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:29:09","slug":"icelands-orf-genetics-lands-e5m-to-scale-plant-based-growth-factors-for-cultivated-meat-eyes-e7m-total","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/148707\/","title":{"rendered":"Iceland\u2019s ORF Genetics lands \u20ac5M to scale plant-based growth factors for cultivated meat; eyes \u20ac7M total"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>K\u00f3pavogur, <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconcanals.com\/?s=Iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Iceland<\/a>-based ORF Genetics, a plant biotechnology company, has raised \u20ac5M to expand its MESOkine growth-factor portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>The funding round, which remains open until mid-October, is expected to reach \u20ac7M with additional investor participation.<\/p>\n<p>Contentlockr<\/p>\n<p>The company plans a major scale-up of MESOkine production to meet the needs of cultivated meat producers as the industry moves from research into large-scale commercialisation.<\/p>\n<p>ORF Genetics aims to increase capacity fourteenfold by 2027 and achieve a 10,000-fold scale-up by 2032.<\/p>\n<p>ORF Genetics: Pioneer in plant biotechnology<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2001, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orfgenetics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ORF Genetics<\/a> specialises in plant biotechnology that creates high-quality recombinant proteins, including human and animal growth factors, using bioengineered barley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe produce these proteins in bioengineered barley\u2014a sustainable, safe, and highly cost-effective method\u2014backed by 17 years of growth-factor manufacturing expertise,\u201d says the company on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7371501699477213184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Berglind R\u00e1n \u00d3lafsd\u00f3ttir, the company is dedicated to advancing genetic science by developing efficient and safe solutions for producing these proteins.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s Orfeus expression system uses barley grain to produce recombinant proteins, particularly effective for growth factors and cytokines.<\/p>\n<p>This technology has allowed ORF Genetics to develop a portfolio of growth factors, including human growth factors for the stem cell research market, as well as for its own successful skincare brand, BIOEFFECT, which features a plant-based version of EGF (Endotoxin-free Growth Factors).<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch in 2010, BIOEFFECT has become a popular anti-ageing skincare brand, with over 30 per cent of Icelandic women using it.
