The ensembles are not athleisure or business casual looks; these are stunts \u2014 all leather suits, Louis Vuitton T-shirts and dresses slit up the thighs. The Instagram account <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/leaguefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LeagueFits<\/a>, dedicated to both the NBA and WNBA, has more than 1 million followers, as casual fans and die-hards alike lock in to see what their faves are wearing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q500063b6nxvgmf1es@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This moment would have been hard to imagine back in 1997, when the league began its inaugural season. But it suits the current landscape, where rookies are featured in ad campaigns with Coach, Caitlin Clark is dressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/16\/style\/prada-caitlin-clark-wnba-draft-lotw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by Prada<\/a>, and fan favorites Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman are photographed wearing Burberry on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/stud-budz-natisha-hiedeman-courtney-williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> pages of Vogue<\/a>. Fueled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/news\/wnba-delivers-record-setting-2024-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">record-setting viewership<\/a> and buzzy stars, the WNBA is booming \u2014 and that boom is mirrored in the clothes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q500073b6ns0a9ziu6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the early days of the league, game day outfits largely flew under the radar, said Michelle Smith, a senior writer at The Next Hoops who has covered the league since its beginning. But as the league began its rollout, the players were presented in a very specific, feminine way, regardless of what the players wanted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q500083b6npdiarot0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI remember skirts and dresses and heels and makeup and hair down and things that were clearly feminizing,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThey were, in that moment, trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Four-time WNBA All-Star Ticha Penicheiro, now retired, was drafted in 1998, the league\u2019s second year. There were no tunnel fits, and no photographers capturing the moments leading up to games \u2014 none of what fans have become accustomed to in the last few years, she said. When actually on the way to the stadium itself, players dressed informally, sometimes just in team sweats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000a3b6n0td1z3zs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But she does remember a fight over jeans. Like the NBA, the league wanted players to dress professionally, Penicheiro said, and jeans were deemed too casual. The WNBA didn\u2019t have chartered, private flights like the men did \u2014 a rule that only just changed last year \u2014 and public flights meant the players were readily visible to the world. The league wanted them to look more presentable, Penicheiro recalled. (Diana Taurasi, longtime Phoenix Mercury star, has spoken about being fined for wearing ripped jeans, and being told they had to wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@ringernba\/video\/7506933426646306079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">slacks and penny loafers<\/a> when traveling.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000b3b6nhvc0leb7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou don\u2019t pay us enough to determine that we cannot wear jeans,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was ridiculous. I remember that everybody was like, \u2018No, we\u2019re putting our foot down.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000c3b6njrirr97t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the time, the league was basically a startup, Smith said, and heavily subsidized by the NBA. Who was their audience? Who did they appeal to? The league was still navigating these questions. And when not on the basketball court, the players themselves were largely invisible \u2014 barring a magazine feature, there was no way to show off their fit off the court, or even just their personalities.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-1064062584.jpg\" alt=\"Tina Thompson of the Houston Comets arrives during Game Three of the 1998 WNBA Finals, in a very different vibe from today's entrances.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000d3b6nmyn9t8ux@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI just don\u2019t think that was a place for player expression,\u201d Smith said. \u201cYou just didn\u2019t see players outside of their basketball context a lot.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000e3b6n46mv1epy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But players did find ways to show off their style. Veteran players with more money would sometimes spring for designer items, Penicheiro said, though stylists were rare. Others played in lipstick (Tina Thompson) or freshly manicured nails (Lisa Leslie). For one All-Star game \u2014 when Penicheiro knew the cameras would be on \u2014 she sprung for a stylist consultation, paying $5,000 for five suits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000f3b6n6dzo65pu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the league grew both in fans and visibility, that relationship toward fashion changed. Smith remembers players starting to use the WNBA draft as one way to express themselves and their style. Where players were once expected to cosplay as corporate executives, often opting for feminine pantsuits or dresses, some women began breaking the mold.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000g3b6nfdkvxlca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One player that sticks out? Brittney Griner, who showed up to the 2013 draft wearing a tailored off-white suit and matching white Converse. As the most exciting player entering the league that year, her masculine look stood out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000h3b6noj9szssr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBrittney came into that draft day, from a fashion standpoint, wholly herself,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI think that might have been a catalyst point for the league in terms of players really getting to express who they are, their identities, their queer identities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-166674408.jpg\" alt=\"Participants pose for a group photo prior to the 2013 WNBA Draft, with Brittney Griner and her eye-popping suit front and center.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000i3b6nut4lfwoo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Steadily the envelope continued being pushed. Now retired, Ty Young, also known for her tomboyish personal style, launched her own fashion brand while still playing in 2016. That same year, Swin Cash, then with the New York Liberty, appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, not in her uniform but in a bright red Michael Kors silk chiffon dress, head tilted back and lips slightly parted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000j3b6nh2ucmoo9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fashion isn\u2019t always made for women who are 6-foot-5 with size 11 feet. For their tall, athletic builds, it can be difficult to find clothes that will actually fit, said Amadi Brooks, who has styled both A\u2019ja Wilson and Sydney Colson.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000k3b6ngcvtm1c9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And who has the time? Young players are constantly in uniform or team gear in both high school and college, Brooks said. Once you go pro, there\u2019s long road trips and other hindrances \u2014 there simply isn\u2019t space to explore.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000l3b6n461otphh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sylvia Fowles, one of the league\u2019s most decorated stars and newly inducted Hall of Famer, remembers when she was drafted to the Chicago Sky, and people assumed she was part of a high school or college team.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock-editorial-5636121aw.jpg\" alt=\" Swin Cash at the Sports Illustrated Fashionable 50 NYC Event in 2016, holding a copy of her stylish magazine cover.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2997\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000m3b6ne569yn1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The league didn\u2019t have the same notoriety back then, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000n3b6ngvz9jdps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That has obviously changed. LeagueFits launched on Instagram in 2018, quickly becoming a major outlet for fashion in both the NBA and WNBA, pushing attention toward tunnel fits and player self-expression in general.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000o3b6nbfnxqabb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnce we started getting paid more attention through social media, through television contracts, that\u2019s when you start to see more personality come out as the tunnel fits,\u201d Fowles said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000p3b6nj47mmrb5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, a fan may know nothing about a player\u2019s actual basketball abilities, but they\u2019ll remember a jacket they wore, or a pair of heels they flaunted. Gone are the days that WNBA players only had visibility on the court; now, they can generate buzz through a fit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000q3b6n7irbu0ed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe players are a brand,\u201d Penicheiro said. \u201cThe tunnel fits are super important these days. It was just a game fit, she said, rather than \u201ca game in itself.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000s3b6nqmqfuhzl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cComing into the league, I would say it\u2019s changed in the sense of every person is empowered to feel like they can become an artist,\u201d Westbeld said. \u201cI think that\u2019s the most beautiful thing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000t3b6ngxcjpwsb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even among players, fashion has become a way to connect, said Rae Burrell, of the LA Sparks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000u3b6nsh55aek4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSometimes in the locker room, my teammates and I have tried on Rickea (Jackson)\u2019s boots. We\u2019ll do fun stuff like that,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll borrow (Dearica Hamby\u2019s) purses for my outfit. Or she\u2019ll call me and ask if I have any sunglasses or a purse and stuff. So sometimes we help each other out, like even just putting them together.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q5000v3b6nucc2s66w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Who are you off the basketball court? This is now the question players are grappling with. Before this season even began, Brooks said she had multiple discussions with league veteran Sydney Colson about how she wanted to use her style to showcase herself beyond basketball. Elsewhere in the league, Minnesota Lynx guard Williams, who was featured in Vogue, was fined multiple times this season for wearing Moolah Kicks, a small, woman-owned basketball shoe brand, because the company doesn\u2019t have an agreement with the WNBA. While the league grows, there is still a limit to players\u2019 power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfcoh7q500103b6nlcdkr70j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And yet the fans are loving it. The WNBA hasn\u2019t always had great fan engagement, Smith said, but the fashion helps drive interest.
