Most of the box\u2019s contents were unsalvageable, save for a few negatives: images of Glastonbury festival goers and snaps from the X-Girl show. Hill wasn\u2019t on assignment, just capturing what she thought looked cool, and the photography reflects X-Girl\u2019s scrappy, skate-schooled, anti-establishment spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was cheap and cheerful, and more about having a good time than a serious fashion show,\u201d says Hill of the day. \u201cIt still had more impact than many of those that take months of planning and money.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her words echo Gordon\u2019s in her 2015 memoir,\u00a0Girl in a Band: \u201cX-Girl\u2019s sidewalk guerrilla fashion show was a success in that it came off at all,\u201d Gordon wrote. \u201cIn a way, X-Girl gave me far more notoriety than Sonic Youth ever did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cX-Girl was real girls\u2019 clothes\u2014what they were wearing and wanted to wear,\u201d says Hill. She already had a few of their pieces\u2014a sleeveless tabard top, a checked mini-skirt\u2014from a small selection that was available at Slam City Skates in London\u2019s Covent Garden.<\/p>\n
Sevigny, now a longtime friend of Hill\u2019s, has written the book\u2019s introduction. At the time of the show, she had been working as X-Girl\u2019s fit model and crashing on stylist and \u201cindie royalty\u201d von Furth\u2019s couch. She recalls the \u201cromance and love of hijinks\u201d that inspired the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe exuberance captured in Angela\u2019s photos was a combination of being part of something that didn\u2019t happen all too often,\u201d she writes. \u201cWe did it without permits or permission, we broke the \u2018fashion\u2019 rules, [and] a few city rules, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the coming months, Hill shares that Idea will publish a decades-spanning book on Sevigny herself. \u201cHer mother\u2019s so good\u2014she saved everything, every little news clipping, photograph,\u201d says Hill. \u201cAnd Chlo\u00eb saved all of her clothes, of course. It\u2019s amazing, this archive they have between them.\u201d<\/p>\n
