{"id":150425,"date":"2025-09-12T02:42:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/150425\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T02:42:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:42:07","slug":"she-is-the-wta-player-who-lost-29-matches-in-a-row-in-the-longest-losing-streak-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/150425\/","title":{"rendered":"She is the WTA player who lost 29 matches in a row in the longest losing streak in history"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Not every streak in tennis is something that players want, with some players struggling to find a win from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The longest winning streak in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WTA<\/a> history is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/martina-navratilova\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Martina Navratilova<\/a>, who won an incredible 74 consecutive matches in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Navratilova\u2019s streak was eventually ended by Helena Sulkova in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/australian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> semifinals, and that run has never been beaten since.<\/p>\n<p>While the longest losing streak has come nowhere near to 74 matches, one WTA player did lose 29 matches in a row.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2233605741-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A general view shows Arthur Ashe Stadium during the men's singles final tennis match between Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Italy's Jannik Sinner on day fifteen of the US Open tennis tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.\" \/>Photo by MANDEL NGAN\/AFP via Getty ImagesMadeleine Pegel: The WTA player with the longest losing streak in history<\/p>\n<p>The person who has the most consecutive matches in WTA history is Madeleine Pegel, the Swedish player who competed in the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>At 24 years old, Pegel made her WTA Tour debut at her home tournament in Bastad, losing in the first round to a fellow Swede player.<\/p>\n<p>While many players lose their debut match on tour, what Pegel did not know at the time is that she would go on to lose 29 consecutive matches.<\/p>\n<p>These losses for Pegel included her being beaten by many different players including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/billie-jean-king\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billie Jean King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After continued failed attempts to win her first match, Pegel would finally make her breakthrough in 1972, but this did not appear to spark into a blockbuster career as there is very little public information about the Swedish woman.<\/p>\n<p>One losing streak that did spawn into an impressive run came last year, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/wta-player-finally-wins-after-24-match-losing-streak-comes-to-an-end-in-the-china-open-first-round\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shuai Zhang ended her 24-match losing streak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/zhang-shuai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zhang<\/a> has been ranked as high as world number 22, but just could not find any sort of confidence after losing 24 consecutive matches.<\/p>\n<p>That all changed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/china-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China Open<\/a> in Beijing last year, where Zhang beat McCartney Kessler to end her losing run.<\/p>\n<p>It did not end there, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/shuai-zhang-breaks-a-china-open-record-with-her-shock-win-over-emma-navarro\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zhang also beating Emma Navarro<\/a>, Greet Minnen and Magdalena Frech to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>WTA Player\u2019s with longest losing streaksMatches they lost in a rowPeriod that the losing streak took place1.
