Katherine Schwarzenegger<\/a> is opening up about her journey to becoming a step-parent \u2015 and how a step-parent coach has helped her along the way. <\/p>\n

The 35-year-old, who has three children with her husband, actor Chris Pratt<\/a>, is also a step-parent to Pratt\u2019s son, Jack.<\/p>\n

Pratt shares 12-year-old Jack with his ex-wife, Anna Faris.<\/p>\n

Schwarzenegger said during a joint podcast appearance with Pratt that she would recommend a step-parenting coach or therapist to anyone with a blended family, as she retained one \u201cright when we got engaged\u201d and found it \u201cessential.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been incredibly helpful for me and also just understanding my role as a step-parent,\u201d the author said during an appearance on the \u201cParenting & You with Dr. Shefali\u201d<\/a> podcast, released on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cStep-parenting \u2015 like parenting \u2015 has no, you know, handbook,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause also I have the benefit of being in both roles, step-parenting is extra confusing because you aren\u2019t a parent, you\u2019re not a nanny, you\u2019re not an assistant,\u201d Schwarzenegger added. \u201cYou have responsibilities in all of those areas, but you\u2019re not either of them. It\u2019s a confusing thing to try to navigate where you fit in.\u201d <\/p>\n

While she shared that \u201cevery dynamic is obviously very different\u201d within each family, she said that she, Pratt, Faris and Faris\u2019 partner \u2015 cinematographer Michael Barrett\u2015 all co-parent \u201cvery well\u201d together. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt works when everybody is willing to put in the work,\u201d Schwarzenegger said. <\/p>\n

Pratt added that being in the position of a step-parent is \u201ca tough job\u201d and you don\u2019t always \u201cend up getting the credit you deserve.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIf a parent is in there doing the hard work \u2015 in the paint \u2015 of creating structure for a child and holding children accountable, and it\u2019s not a biological child, it can feel thankless. But it\u2019s a really, really important job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwyneth Paltrow \u2015 who now has a blended family thanks to her second marriage to Brad Falchuck \u2015 has also opened up about the harsh realities of being a step-parent<\/a>. <\/p>\n
