{"id":150630,"date":"2025-09-12T04:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T04:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/150630\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T04:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T04:40:14","slug":"u-s-influencer-who-filmed-himself-wrestling-wild-crocodiles-in-australia-is-under-investigation-dangerous-and-illegal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/150630\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. influencer who filmed himself wrestling wild crocodiles in Australia is under investigation: &#8220;Dangerous and illegal&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian authorities are investigating an American influencer who filmed himself wrestling wild crocodiles in Queensland, condemning the &#8220;extremely dangerous and illegal&#8221; activity.<\/p>\n<p>In a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DORB1o7kX-u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">videos on his Instagram<\/a>, bare-chested Mike Holston, who goes by &#8220;therealtarzann&#8221; online, tussles with saltwater and freshwater crocodiles.<\/p>\n<p>In one post, he dives into the water, emerging holding the crocodile by its throat with blood streaming from his elbow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He got a hold of me, but I got a hold of him,&#8221; Holston says.<\/p>\n<p>In another, Holston jumps off a boat and into a bushy waterway in pursuit of a crocodile, which he then wrestles.<\/p>\n<p>Holston has said the videos, which have amassed millions of views, were for &#8220;educational purposes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the videos prompted outrage in Australia, where the maximum penalty for interfering with a saltwater crocodile is $24,800.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Queensland said Wednesday it was &#8220;actively investigating&#8221; the two videos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These actions are extremely dangerous and illegal, and we are actively exploring strong compliance action including fines to deter any person from this type of behaviour,&#8221; its environment department said. &#8220;Let us be clear: people should not attempt to capture freshwater or saltwater crocodiles in Queensland, unless they are trained and licensed to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s Premier David Crisafulli also called the influencer a &#8220;goose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holston did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These posts can have disastrous consequences&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s famously diverse flora and fauna is highly protected and attempts to interfere with it can face strict penalties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-influencer-baby-wombat-australia-sparks-outrage\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Another U.S. influencer sparked outrage<\/a> in March after a video appeared to show her pestering a baby wombat.<\/p>\n<p>And Bob Irwin, the father of late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/carrying-on-the-legacy-of-steve-irwin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\">celebrity &#8220;crocodile hunter&#8221; Steve Irwin<\/a>, said this week people needed to respect Australia&#8217;s wildlife or be deported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People visiting our country need to respect our wildlife, or they need to be booted out the door,&#8221; he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/travel\/travel-updates\/incidents\/dckhead-bob-irwin-slams-us-influencer-mike-holstons-crocodile-catching-video\/news-story\/3f44df07dd5ec2f9e77e3bdcfe7c7ef1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement released to Australian media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These posts can have disastrous consequences for both people and wildlife,&#8221; Irwin said.<\/p>\n<p>Government figures estimate there are between 20,000 and 30,000 saltwater crocodiles in Queensland in a vast area known as &#8220;Croc Country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles can measure to 13 feet long, with male saltwater crocs weighing over 600 pounds and male freshwater crocs weighing as much as 132 pounds, <\/p>\n<p>They are a protected and vulnerable species and have been known to attack humans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to their size and their territorial, opportunistic nature, saltwater crocodiles are considered an aggressive species,&#8221; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detsi.qld.gov.au\/our-department\/news-media\/down-to-earth\/snappy-facts-to-know-about-crocs-in-qld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Queensland environment department says<\/a>. &#8220;Basically, once these crocs reach adult size, any creature they can overpower is fair game. If a human encroaches on a saltwater croc&#8217;s territory, the croc may decide to attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Between December 1985 and April 2024, there were 34 non-fatal attacks and 14 fatal attacks by wild saltwater crocodiles in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2024, police said human remains were found inside a large crocodile\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/crocodile-blamed-killing-man-euthanized-australia-second-in-month\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspected of killing a tourist<\/a>\u00a0in Australia. A month before that, a 12-year-old girl was snatched by a crocodile while swimming with her family in a creek in the Northern Territory.
