Feeling anxious from time to time can happen to all of us, but those of us who experience more frequent, intense bouts of anxiety may suffer from conditions such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/mental-health-expert-shares-six-35874053\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"a more serious but common mental health conditionLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a more serious but common mental health condition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"NHSLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS<\/a> states main symptom of this condition is &#8220;feelings of stress or worry that affect your daily life and are difficult to control\u201d, but other symptoms can be prevalent too. People with GAD may experience \u201cdifficulty sleeping; feeling restless, irritable or finding it difficult to concentrate; feeling lightheaded or dizzy; low mood or depression,\u201d and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It\u2019s important to seek professional help if you believe you have an anxiety disorder, and there are a number of treatment options available. But whether you have anxiety or just notice it creeping up from time to time, teacher and podcast host Maggie Sterling recently took to TikTok <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/im-psychologist-exercise-can-calm-35228641\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"to share a technique that can help for many people - including herLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to share a technique that can help for many people &#8211; including her<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In her video, which has so far been viewed more than 772K times, Maggie detailed all the methods she\u2019d tried to manage her symptoms, including <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/therapy\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"therapyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">therapy<\/a> and self-help books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She then said: \u201cAbout a year ago, I finally found the solution. The problem is, you\u2019re not going to like it because it\u2019s not an easy fix but man, it is an effective fix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She continued: \u201cHere\u2019s what you\u2019re going to do with your anxiety next time it comes up: you\u2019re gonna let it be there. I know, please stay with me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to let the anxiety be there, you\u2019re not going to fear it, you\u2019re not going to focus on it, you\u2019re not gonna get frustrated about it, we\u2019re not going to do any of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Maggie said &#8216;quick fixes&#8217;, such as meditation, can be ineffective for some people. She also said taking medication as an immediate response to a spell of anxiety may not work, although she does recognise the importance of medication as a helpful and necessary treatment option for people with ongoing problems with anxiety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Maggie referenced Dr Claire Weekes\u2019 book, Hope and Help for Your Nerves, which details the importance of letting the anxiety \u201cfloat through your body\u201d and choosing to \u201cwelcome\u201d the negative feelings rather than flee from them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Maggie then said: \u201cNo one ever told me to allow it [anxiety] and, to be honest, I probably wouldn\u2019t have listened to them anyway but please take it from someone who has tried everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She urged people to \u201callow\u201d their feelings of anxiety then sit with them, letting them to pass through their body rather than trying to answer them, or \u201curgently\u201d act on them in a bid to \u201cfix them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the comments section, people shared their own experiences with anxiety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">One person said: \u201cYUP! My anxiety told me \u2018something bad is about to happen\u2019 and I cured it by responding, \u2018ok let it happen I\u2019m ready.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about stopping the cortisol cycle and POOF there goes the anxiety (not that simple but [you know what I mean]). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy teaches this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Someone else said: \u201c\u2018Do it scared\u2019 changed my life. Also I view my anxiety as a wall and sometimes I just run directly at it because most of the time it\u2019s not a real wall and it\u2019s just a plastic curtain which looks like a wall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A third advised: \u201cRemember it\u2019s a bad day not a bad life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Someone else added: \u201cAcceptance. It will go away if you accept it. Took me 10 years to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NHS states: \u201cMost people feel anxious sometimes. It does not always mean you have GAD.
