Wilson cited \u201cthe Benihana Christmas episode\u201d in which \u201cMichael [Steve Carell] and Andy [Ed Helms] draw with a Sharpie on one of the Asian women that they\u2019ve brought back to the Christmas party is jaw-droppingly, kind of horrific.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it\u2019s a tricky conversation. It\u2019s like they\u2019re clueless, and in their cluelessness, they\u2019re racist and insensitive, and they\u2019re always saying the wrong thing,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s Michael, Dwight, and Andy\u2026and Kevin [Brian Baumgartner] for that matter. So it\u2019s a show based around clueless, insensitive, racist, sexist people that kind of mirrors the United States in a lot of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n
He gets that as humor it\u2019s \u201cfunny as hell and it also kind of skewers a particular American sensibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it definitely goes pretty far if you dig deep,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cCould it happen today? I think it would have to be very, very different if it were made in this environment.<\/p>\n
The mockumentary about a fictitious paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania aired from 2005 to 2013. There had been a planned spinoff, potentially called \u201cThe Farm,\u201d that followed Wilson\u2019s character but was never made.<\/p>\n
The Emmy-nominated actor explained during the podcast that \u201cNBC at that time had a new regime that came in and they wanted to do big, bright, flashy, splashy shows that were multi-cams and going back to \u2018Friends\u2019 kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they were just not interested at all in \u2018Office\u2019 spinoffs at the time. Had they taken \u2018The Farm,\u2019 they\u2019d probably have another billion dollars in the bank. Even now, all the people that have seen \u2018The Office\u2019 20 times, they\u2019re going to watch \u2018The Farm\u2019 at least once or twice,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWould it have been as good as \u2018The Office?\u2019 No. No way. Not even close. Would it have been good? Would it have been solid? Would it have been a good solid comedy? Yeah, it would have, and we would\u2019ve done some really cool stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think they really missed out,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Peacock, NBC\u2019s streaming service, recently debuted \u201cThe Paper\u201d which is a spinoff of \u201cThe Office\u201d which features the fictional documentary crew from that show.<\/p>\n
