Kennedy, Jr., which involves doing 100 push-ups (and 50 pull-ups) in under 10 minutes.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Experts largely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/25\/style\/hegseth-rfk-jr-fitness-challenge.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">don\u2019t recommend<\/a> that level of intensity for the average person, but they widely agree on the benefits of push-ups in general. \u201cThey\u2019re the perfect exercise,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilliardstudiomethod.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Hilliard<\/a>, a certified Pilates teacher and owner of Hilliard Studio Method in Charlotte, North Carolina.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> John Hinson, MD, a Florida-based board-certified orthopedic surgeon, agreed. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to identify a single exercise that engages as many body areas as a push-up,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But here\u2019s the thing: Push-ups aren\u2019t for everyone. Some people can\u2019t do them due to physical limitations\u2014and others simply find them unpleasant.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The good news is you can modify a push-up to reap the same rewards and build your way up to doing more. Here\u2019s what Hilliard, Hinson, and three other experts told Health is the best way to tweak a push-up.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Before we get into how to modify a push-up to gain the same perks, it\u2019s important to understand how a push-up changes your body for the better.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> You might think of push-ups as arm exercises, but they do a lot more than just buff up your biceps. \u201cPush-ups are a bodyweight exercise that builds strength in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/fitness\/what-muscles-do-push-ups-work\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several areas at once<\/a>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corefitprov.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denise Chakoian<\/a>, a master trainer and the founder and owner of CORE in Providence, Rhode Island.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to Chakoian, the movement works like this: When you lower your body during a push-up, the chest and shoulders control the descent while the elbows bend. As you press back up, the chest and triceps do most of the work. Your core and legs stay tight so your hips don\u2019t drop or rise.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> That\u2019s how you get an exercise that works your core, legs, chest, shoulders, and back of the arms\u2014all at once.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But the particular focus on the upper body is precisely what makes push-ups so difficult, explained <a href=\"https:\/\/gaithappens.com\/about-gait-happens\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milica McDowell, PT, DPT, C-EP<\/a>, a Montana-based physical therapist and exercise physiologist. \u201cMany individuals struggle with adequate chest and shoulder strength or lack adequate wrist mobility to do them with proper form,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you have a physical limitation that makes push-ups especially challenging, such as an injury affecting your back or elbow, it\u2019s best to talk to a doctor about the right modification for you.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But if you simply find push-ups uncomfortable or awkward, you can still get the bodyweight-strengthening benefits of the exercise by doing a modified version.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For true beginners, experts agreed the ideal starting point is a wall push-up.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The reason is simple: It still works the same muscles\u2014but it\u2019s the easiest variation to do, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attain-pt.com\/dr-matthew-cifelli-pt-dpt\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Cifelli, DPT, PT,<\/a> a physical therapist based in New Jersey. Out of all the potential modifications, you\u2019re closest to a vertical standing position and farthest from horizontal.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In other words, this version puts the least amount of pressure on the body, and therefore requires the least amount of strength.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> To do a correct wall push-up, follow these steps:\n<\/p>\n<p> Stand facing a wall with your palms flat against it, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Keep your feet slightly apart and your body in a straight line.\u00a0Bend your elbows to slowly lower your chest toward the wall.Push back to your starting position, keeping your core engaged and avoiding any sagging in the hips.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> One area to pay particular attention to is the placement of your feet, Cifelli noted. \u201cIf your feet are closer to the wall, the less intense it is,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf your feet are farther away from the wall, the more intense it is. The goal would be as you gain strength, control, and confidence, you\u2019d walk your feet away from the wall.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> When you&#8217;ve mastered the wall push-up, you might be ready to level up. Experts agree that the next step is the incline push-up, a slightly more challenging modification. To do it, place your palms against a sturdy, stationary surface, such as a kitchen counter, the back of a couch, a heavy chair, or a weight bench. Follow the same instructions as the wall push-up. A rule of thumb to remember: the closer the surface is to the floor, the harder the exercise becomes.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For an even tougher option, try the knees-down push-up next. Start in a plank position, then lower your knees to the ground.
