{"id":15320,"date":"2025-07-17T02:49:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T02:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/15320\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T02:49:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T02:49:15","slug":"warnings-issued-after-multiple-great-white-shark-sightings-off-bailey-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/15320\/","title":{"rendered":"Warnings issued after multiple great white shark sightings off Bailey Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BAILEY ISLAND, Maine (WGME) &#8212; Shark warning flags are now on display at Cedar Beach in Harpswell after multiple great white shark sightings off Midcoast Maine.<\/p>\n<p>Two separate CBS13 viewers reported seeing a shark, about 12 feet long, in the same area off Bailey Island.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Griffin sent us a video he says was taken on Monday east of Bailey Island.<\/p>\n<p>Another viewer reports seeing a shark chasing a seal in the same spot on the east side of Bailey Island around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A National Geographic photographer reports he had run-in with a great white shark under water just four feet from him off the coast of Harpswell last week.<\/p>\n<p>Out of an abundance of caution, Harpswell Marine Resources &amp; Harbor Management says due to two documented great white shark sightings observed in 48 hours east of Bailey Island, shark notification flags are being displayed at Cedar Beach in Harpswell. <\/p>\n<p>Beachgoers are still able to access the water. The notification system is in place for people to make informed decisions only.<\/p>\n<p>About 5 years ago, Maine\u2019s first and only deadly shark attack occurred in that same area.<\/p>\n<p>If you observe a shark, if possible, please take a picture and contact the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center at 207-893-2810.
