\n\tMore than 15 years ago, Joaquin Phoenix<\/a> was responsible for one of the internet\u2019s earliest viral moments when he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman<\/a> in character.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oscar winner recently recounted his \u201chorrible\u201d Feb. 11, 2009 appearance on the talk show, which came after he did the pre-interview in character for his Casey Affleck<\/a>-helmed mockumentary I\u2019m Still Here (2010), which saw Phoenix quitting acting to pursue a hip-hop career.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI realized that it was just a little silly, so I called them back and I said, \u2018Listen, this is what I\u2019m doing. I\u2019m coming out here and I\u2019m doing this whole thing,’\u201d he explained on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018And I just want Dave to like, lacerate me. I just want it to be really dangerous,’\u201d Phoenix continued. \u201cThat was the kind of intention\u2026 I just always wanted to get this reaction and see how I would respond to that. So it was beneficial for no one to know, except when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough he recalled the interview was \u201chorrible,\u201d Phoenix noted, \u201cIt was strange because in some ways, it was a success, and it was also just one of the worst nights of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Eddington<\/a> actor said the appearance \u201cwas so uncomfortable,\u201d adding: \u201cI regret it. I\u2019ll never do it again. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019m Still Here grossed $626,396 worldwide and holds a 53% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, panned as \u201cdisturbing\u201d and \u201cpainful to watch.\u201d <\/p>\n
