\n\tAdolescence<\/a> breakout Owen Cooper<\/a> has made history as the youngest-ever male Emmy winner in any acting category during Sunday\u2019s 2025 Emmys. <\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tAt just 15, the British star becomes the first of his age to manage such a feat after winning best supporting actor in a limited\/anthology series or TV movie Sunday night. The previous record holder was Scott Jacoby, who was 16 years old when he won a Primetime Emmy in 1973 for his role in\u00a0That Certain Summer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStanding up here\u2026 wow this is so surreal\u201d Cooper said while picking up the award in downtown Los Angeles. \u201cTonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort you can achieve anything in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was nothing about three years ago, I\u2019m here now,\u201d he added. \u201cIt may have my name on this award but it really belongs to the people behind the camera and all the cast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper captivated audiences as teen murderer Jamie Miller in Netflix\u2019s Adolescence<\/a>, each episode filmed across one consecutive take, also starring Stephen Graham, Christine Tremarco, Erin Doherty and Ashley Walters.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe teenager was a cover star for\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>\u00a0when the series flew to the top of\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u2018s charts upon its March release. It is the second most-watched Netflix show of all time, behind Wednesday, notching up over 540 million hours of viewing time.\u00a0Adolescence\u00a0is also the most-watched U.K. title ever on the platform, following in the footsteps of Richard Gadd\u2019s\u00a0Baby Reindeer\u00a0with its focus on British talent and storytelling.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show kickstarted a global conversation on the online \u201cmanosphere<\/a>\u201d as it became clear that Jamie\u2019s time on the internet had shaped a radicalized, rageful teenager capable of committing a murder on a female classmate.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe could have been more protected,\u201d Cooper told\u00a0THR\u00a0about playing Jamie and whether his character could have been saved. \u201cHe\u2019s speaking to the wrong people online, which his family obviously has no idea about. Eddie and his mum could have just told him to come off [his phone]. Simple things like that could stop someone changing their life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper and his co-star Doherty also spoke in depth about their push-and-pull third episode where Doherty\u2019s psychologist realizes the scale of Jamie\u2019s online indoctrination. \u201cWe were then throwing even more things at each other,\u201d she told the teenager. \u201cYou were yawning in my face! You wouldn\u2019t have done that if you didn\u2019t [feel free]. I just feel like there was an element of great realism: \u2018Let\u2019s see how well we know this script, how well we can push each other.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCooper added about his spontaneity while filming: \u201cI wasn\u2019t even aware in the moment. It wasn\u2019t till after that I was like, \u2018Oh, yeah, I did that. I had no awareness of it. I think when I said, \u2018Look at me now!\u2019 That\u2019s not in the script. I remember thinking, \u2018Have I actually just said that?\u2019 Because I had no plan. It just popped in my head and I thought it was a powerful thing to do. Then it came out and I\u2019d use it in every other take.\u201d<\/p>\n
