Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation from the crowd at Sunday\u2019s 2025 Emmy Awards ceremony as his \u2018Late Show\u2019\u2014whose surprise cancellation was announced by CBS earlier this year\u2014won the \u201coutstanding talk series\u201d prize, in a ceremony that saw very minimal political commentary and references.<\/p>\n

Colbert received his first standing ovation as he appeared on stage to present the award for the \u201cBest Lead Actor in a Comedy Series\u201d and poked fun at his show\u2019s cancellation, saying: \u201cWhile I have your attention, is anyone hiring?\u201d<\/p>\n
The late-night host then shared his old headshot with actor Harrison Ford, and asked him, \u201cCan you pass this on to Spielberg?\u201d<\/p>\n
Colbert and the entire team of the \u2018Late Show with Stephen Colbert\u2019 received a standing ovation from the audience again after the show won its first \u201cOutstanding Talk Series\u201d Emmy\u2014also the first time a network show has won the category, first established in 2015.<\/p>\n
In his acceptance speech, the comedian thanked CBS for \u201cgiving us the privilege to be part of the late-night tradition, which I hope continues long after we\u2019re no longer doing this show\u201d and the \u201c200 incredible professionals\u201d who work on the show.<\/p>\n
Colbert said in 2015 he set out to do a late-night comedy show about \u201clove,\u201d but at a \u201ccertain point, and you can guess when that point was, I realized that we were doing a late-night comedy show about loss.\u201d<\/p>\n
The late night host closed his speech saying that ten years later, \u201cI have never loved my country more desperately,\u201d adding: \u201cGod bless America. Stay strong, be brave.\u201d<\/p>\n
Were There Any Major Political Comments Made At The Emmys?<\/p>\n
The show was light on politics, although not completely devoid of it. Hannah Einbinder, who won an Emmy for the \u201cBest Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series\u201d for her work on the show \u201cHacks,\u201d closed out her acceptance speech<\/a> by saying: \u201cFuck ICE and free Palestine!\u201d While presenting the talk show prize, Bryan Cranston joked about \u201cdestructive woke degenerates like Tom Hanks,\u201d appearing to mock President Donald Trump\u2019s recent attack<\/a> on the Oscar-winning actor. A few other political displays and messages were shared during the red carpet ceremony. Einbinder\u2019s \u201cHacks\u201d co-star, Megan Stalter, appeared on the red carpet with a handbag that had a sticker that read \u201cCease Fire!\u201d and was wearing an \u201cArtists4Ceasefire\u201d pin, calling for an end to the war in Gaza.
