Reminded that he can be 81 yards from the pin and consider it a failure to not hole out. That he can hit a shot so soft out of the first cut that it rolls to the pin, destined for the cup, only to bounce out in disappointment. No joy for the birdie from the world No. 1. He looked at that ball on the 10th green like he just missed a gimme five-foot par.

Scheffler won the Procore Championship on Sunday for his sixth win in 12 starts, sure. He won his 14th event in 18 months and the 19th of his career, yes. More than anything, though, Scheffler made clear that even in a seemingly light-hearted team-building week in Napa with his Ryder Cup pals, he is there to win.

For all intents and purposes, the tournament was over the moment Scheffler’s pitch bounced off that pin for birdie. He went from four back to tied for the lead within seven holes, doing the exact thing Scheffler always does. Drip. Drip. Drip. Steady golf as the masses fade back to Earth. Other than one frustrating 3-putt for bogey, he finished with six birdies to snag the win from Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin, who missed a five-foot birdie putt that would have sent it to a playoff.

Sunday makes Scheffler just the fourth golfer since 1960 with back-to-back seasons of six or more wins, per Justin Ray, joining luminaries like Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

Scottie and the flag stick are not friends 😒

He is now tied for the lead through 10 @ProcoreChamp.

📺 Golf Channel pic.twitter.com/Z2sBTBt1mC

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 14, 2025

Scheffler may enjoy this a bit extra after spending his pre-tournament news conference playfully digging at reporters for only asking about the upcoming Ryder Cup before reminding them this wasn’t just some practice week.

“I’m present, I’m ready to play this week. I didn’t show up to Napa to talk about the Ryder Cup for four days,” Scheffler said. “I’m here to play a golf tournament.”

While it was a frustrating defeat for Griffin, the 29-year-old surprise breakout star who earned a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup, it was an all-around promising week for the 10 American team golfers, with two weeks until Bethpage. Griffin led through 54 holes and opened birdie-birdie-birdie only to plateau and play the final 15 holes in 1-over par for solo second.

Then, after Lanto Griffin (unrelated) took third and world No. 1 amateur Jackson Koivun finished impressively tied for fourth, four more U.S. Ryder Cuppers (J.J. Spaun, Cameron Young, Sam Burns and Russell Henley) cracked the top 20. Spaun shot a Sunday 66 to rise to T5, while all 10 U.S. Ryder Cuppers made the cut. None finished worse than T43.

Fighting back to one stroke down💪@bengriffingolf gets to 18-under with three to play @ProcoreChamp.

📺 Golf Channel pic.twitter.com/o9UHxWkTOa

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 15, 2025

On the other side of the Atlantic, the entire European Ryder Cup team teed off at the BMW PGA Championship near London, where Tyrrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland and Matt Fitzpatrick tied for fifth, while six others finished inside the top 20.

For Scheffler, his continued dominance further raises the question of what could have been had he not cut his hand while making pasta at Christmas. He remained an elite player, finishing no worse than 23rd, but Scheffler was the first to admit he spent much of February through April getting back to the normally dialed version of himself. Come May, Scheffler was right back to his nine-win 2024 self, if not better.

He won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship for his third and fourth career majors to go with wins at the Byron Nelson, the Memorial and the BMW Championship.

While a fall event win in Napa will not go down in Scheffler’s greatest accomplishments, it’s one more reminder of how dominant he can be, and it comes at the right time.

(Photo: Jed Jacobsohn / Getty Images)

NAPA, Calif. — There are moments where we’re reminded that Scottie Scheffler is playing a different sport.
