{"id":160823,"date":"2025-09-16T12:31:25","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T12:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/160823\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T12:31:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T12:31:25","slug":"colombias-president-petro-decries-us-claim-bogota-failing-to-fight-drugs-drugs-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/160823\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombia\u2019s President Petro decries US claim Bogota failing to fight drugs | Drugs News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia\u2019s President Gustavo Petro appeared visibly frustrated after United States President Donald Trump designated Colombia among several countries Washington believes have \u201cfailed\u201d to cooperate in the international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/6\/3\/aiming-a-blow-at-narcos-colombia-pays-farmers-to-uproot-coca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fight against drugs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday evening, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2025\/09\/presidential-determination-on-major-drug-transit-or-major-illicit-drug-producing-countries-for-fiscal-year-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Trump added Colombia to a list of countries<\/a> that included Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/15\/trump-says-us-struck-another-venezuelan-drug-vessel-killing-three\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venezuela<\/a> as having \u201cfailed demonstrably\u201d during the past 12 months to \u201cadhere to obligations under international counternarcotics agreements and take measures required\u201d against drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Petro\u2019s misguided leadership, coca cultivation &amp; cocaine production in Colombia has increased to historic levels,\u201d the US State Department said on the X social media platform following the announcement of the \u201cpresidential determination\u201d on major drug transit and producing countries.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump \u201chas determined that the Colombian government failed to uphold its drug control obligations, but he has issued a waiver so critical US cooperation, including on counter-narcotics, can continue. Results matter \u2013 we must see progress and it must be soon!\u201d the State Department added.<\/p>\n<p>Responding earlier to the report that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/1\/24\/colombia-shifts-strategy-in-drug-war-away-from-coca-eradication\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colombia had been \u201cdecertified\u201d<\/a> as an ally of Washington in the fight against drugs, Petro said: \u201cThe United States is decertifying us after dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/2\/26\/colombia-launches-elite-force-to-target-rebels-drug-gangs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deaths of police officers and soldiers<\/a>\u201d in the fight against drug cartels and armed groups funded by drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey decertify us after we are the ones who have seized the most cocaine in all of history, the ones who have dismantled thousands of laboratories,\u201d Petro told a cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing does not really have to do with the Colombian people,\u201d he said, according to the Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, it is to stop American society from getting their noses dirty from the desire to work, work, work,\u201d he added, in an apparent reference to the stimulant effects of cocaine.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Ustedes comienzan por una mentira f\u00e1ctica se\u00f1ores US embassy. For the cultivation of coca leaf to decrease, what is needed is not glyphosate dropped from small planes, but a reduction in the demand for cocaine, fundamentally in the US and Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decertification is seen as a punishment for countries not complying with anti-drug efforts and may include sanctions \u2013 which the White House can waive \u2013 including cuts to US assistance and Washington voting against the issue of loans, credit and other forms of aid from development banks to \u201cdecertified\u201d countries.<\/p>\n<p>The US listing of countries that it says have failed in counternarcotic efforts came after Trump said the US military had carried out a strike on an alleged Venezuelan drug vessel on Monday that killed three people in international waters.<\/p>\n<p>It marks the second attack by US forces on seagoing vessels in recent weeks, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/3\/trump-says-11-killed-in-strike-on-alleged-drug-carrying-boat-from-venezuela\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported killing by US forces of 11 people in a strike on a speed boat<\/a>, which officials in Caracas described as an extrajudicial slaying.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights experts have also called into question the legality of such lethal attacks by US forces in international waters on victims that pose no immediate threat to US interests.<\/p>\n<p>In his presidential determination on Monday, Trump once again took aim at Venezuela\u2019s President Nicolas Maduro, whom he accused of being the leader of \u201cone of the largest cocaine trafficking networks in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States will continue to seek to bring Maduro and other members of his complicit regime to justice for their crimes. We will also target Venezuelan foreign terrorist organisations such as Tren de Aragua and purge them from our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/4\/is-venezuela-the-big-cocaine-menace-trump-claims-it-to-be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Al Jazeera reported earlier<\/a> in September, however, UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) data shows that while Colombia, Peru and Bolivia are the leading sources of cocaine trafficking, Venezuela does not figure high in the list of major producers.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest report on cocaine smuggling, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) concluded that Colombia was the source of 85 percent of the drug entering the country.
