Charged particles from the\u00a0Sun\u00a0fueled a strong\u00a0geomagnetic storm\u00a0from late Sunday into Monday, delivering impressive displays of\u00a0Northern Lights\u00a0as far south as the\u00a0Midwest.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, NOAA\u2019s\u00a0Space Weather\u00a0Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning when charged particles from solar wind were forecast to arrive on\u00a0Earth.<\/p>\n
The storm was caused by increased solar wind from a coronal hole, a dark area of the Sun, visible on satellite images, which can produce space weather events here on Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Strong,\u00a0level 3 out of 5, geomagnetic storm conditions were reached on Sunday, producing colorful displays of Aurora Borealis lights as far south as\u00a0Michigan.<\/p>\n
One lucky air\u00a0traveler\u00a0even captured the Northern Lights on their flight from\u00a0New York\u00a0to\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlways look out of airplane windows,\u201d Keagan Wernicke wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
The SWPC uses a 9-point scale known as the KP index to rate geomagnetic storm intensity. Early Monday, the KP index reached 6.67, producing active auroras.<\/p>\n
