\n\tMichael Keaton<\/a> paid respects to the late Charlie Kirk<\/a> at Investigative Reporters and Editors\u2019 50th anniversary gala on Monday night, while also speaking on the gun violence that took his life.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBefore we start to get into the meat of this thing, I\u2019m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably \u2014 not probably \u2014 have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife,\u201d he said as he opened his speech. \u201cYou gotta remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBecause in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\n\tKeaton wasn\u2019t the only speaker at the IRE gala to speak on Kirk\u2019s killing. \u201c60 Minutes\u201d journalist Scott Pelley touched on the topic early in his opening remarks as the event\u2019s host.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCharlie Kirk was murdered to silence his speech, and three months earlier, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were murdered to silence their speech,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMany admired Kirk; many did not,\u201d Pelley went on. \u201cHis catchphrase was \u2018Prove me wrong.\u2019 To some, that phrase was controversial \u2014 even dismissive. But the core idea was: Bring the proof and let\u2019s debate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhether you agreed with Kirk\u2019s ideas or Hortman\u2019s, their murders, their silencing is blood on the First Amendment,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

\n\tKirk died on Sept. 10<\/a> after he was shot during an appearance at a college campus in Utah. He was 31. <\/p>\n

\n\tShortly after news broke of Kirk\u2019s shooting, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce that the young conservative activist had died. He wrote<\/a>, \u201cThe Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. \u201cNo one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family.
