Desi Lydic is disturbed by the Trump administration\u2019s crackdown on free speech in response to the assassination<\/a> of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. <\/p>\n

The recurring Daily Show host condemned the idea that people should be punished for posting negatively about Kirk\u2019s death in her Tuesday monologue, showing a clip of Attorney General Pam Bondi declaring, \u201cThere\u2019s free speech and then there\u2019s hate speech… We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lydic responded, \u201cFirst of all, you would think that the attorney general would know that hate speech is protected by the First Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re not a big reader, it is the first one,\u201d Lydic said. \u201cYou have to read it to get to the one you like,\u201d she joked, referencing the Second Amendment that guarantees the right to bear arms. <\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cNow honestly, if I went back in time and told the Founding Fathers that this is what would become of the First Amendment, they would say, \u2018That\u2019s insane! And why are you wearing pants, woman?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point is, we need to understand that no matter how mad someone makes you online, that\u2019s not enough to make it illegal,\u201d said Lydic. <\/p>\n

Earlier in her monologue, Lydic criticized Vice President JD Vance for using similar rhetoric to Bondi. She shared a clip<\/a> of Vance telling viewers, \u201cWhen you see someone celebrating Charlie\u2019s murder, call them out. And hell, call their employer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this what we want?\u201d Lydic asked. \u201cThe vice president\u2019s job isn\u2019t to lead an online mob. The vice president\u2019s job is to… OK, he doesn\u2019t really have a job, but you get my point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lydic called out Republican congressman Clay Higgins\u2019 declaration<\/a> on Thursday that he\u2019ll push to permanently ban social media users for posting \u201cviolent political hate content.\u201d Higgins also argued that these users should have their business and driver\u2019s licenses revoked. <\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, revoking someone\u2019s driver\u2019s license is not a punishment for them; it\u2019s a punishment for their friends,\u201d Lydic said. <\/p>\n

More seriously, she added, \u201cBut do you see how far this has gotten out of control? We\u2019re going to revoke a person\u2019s driver\u2019s license just for having s–tty tweets?\u201d<\/p>\n
