(WOWT) &#8211; First Alert 6 has the headlines you need to know to get your Wednesday started.<\/p>\n<p>2 dead after house fire in Harlan, Iowa; incident under investigation<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Two people are dead after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/17\/two-dead-after-house-fire-harlan-iowa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/17\/two-dead-after-house-fire-harlan-iowa\/\">house fire in Harlan<\/a> on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The fire started just before 4 p.m. Tuesday in a home near 3rd and Court streets, a release from the Shelby County Sheriff\u2019s Office states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Emergency crews got to the scene and saw the house was full of smoke. They first believed three people were inside, but found two victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Life-saving measures were performed on the victims after they were brought outside. Both were then taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>Omaha mayor to highlight first 100 days in office Wednesday<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Wednesday marks 100 days since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/05\/14\/election-2025-omaha-general-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/05\/14\/election-2025-omaha-general-election-results\/\">Mayor John Ewing Jr.<\/a> took office to serve the city of Omaha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">According to a release from Ewing\u2019s office, he plans to share some of his accomplishments thus far to highlight the milestone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">First Alert 6 also expects to hear more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/15\/omaha-celebrate-bud-crawfords-historic-boxing-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/15\/omaha-celebrate-bud-crawfords-historic-boxing-victory\/\">upcoming celebration<\/a> for Omaha native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/cw-boxing-club-former-boxers-speak-terence-crawfords-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/cw-boxing-club-former-boxers-speak-terence-crawfords-success\/\">Bud Crawford<\/a>, who on Saturday became the first male boxer to capture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/14\/terence-bud-crawford-makes-history-with-victory-over-canelo-alvarez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/14\/terence-bud-crawford-makes-history-with-victory-over-canelo-alvarez\/\">three unified division titles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Ewing is also set to share an announcement about potential future town hall public meetings, the release states. He will speak at 5 p.m. Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">On June 9, Ewing became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/06\/10\/omaha-welcomes-first-black-mayor-john-ewing-after-mondays-inauguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/06\/10\/omaha-welcomes-first-black-mayor-john-ewing-after-mondays-inauguration\/\">Omaha\u2019s 52nd Mayor<\/a> and the first elected Black mayor. He served as a deputy chief with OPD for 25 years, as well as the Douglas County treasurer.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Pillen signs executive order to distribute $20M in property tax relief<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">An additional $20 million in property tax relief will be distributed to Nebraska taxpayers after Gov. Jim Pillen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/gov-pillen-signs-executive-order-distribute-20m-property-tax-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/gov-pillen-signs-executive-order-distribute-20m-property-tax-relief\/\">signed an executive order<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">The additional funds are from an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1011now.com\/2025\/01\/16\/nebraska-rakes-over-29-million-tax-revenue-casinos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.1011now.com\/2025\/01\/16\/nebraska-rakes-over-29-million-tax-revenue-casinos\/\" target=\"_blank\">casino gambling revenue<\/a>, along with unused money in the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund and the School District Property Tax Credit Fund, the governors office says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The executive order comes after several initiatives led by Gov. Pillen to reduce property taxes during his term. His office highlighted their work such as:<\/p>\n<p>Increasing direct relief to property taxpayers to $1.26 billionRemoving community colleges from property tax rollsPlacing revenue caps on school districts, cities, and counties<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Pillen assures that property tax relief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2024\/08\/20\/nebraska-special-session-legislature-passes-tax-reform-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2024\/08\/20\/nebraska-special-session-legislature-passes-tax-reform-bill\/\">remains his top priority<\/a>. He says there\u2019s still more that can be done while blaming political differences for past failings.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term construction project at 72nd and L in Omaha begins<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Off ramps from L to 72nd streets in Omaha <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/long-term-project-reconstruct-72nd-l-interchange-omaha-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/16\/long-term-project-reconstruct-72nd-l-interchange-omaha-begins\/\">are now closed<\/a> for the removal of the L Street Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Construction got underway Tuesday at the interchange with the eastbound L entrance and exit ramps closed at 72nd. These ramps are scheduled to reopen \u201cby winter 2025\u2033, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The long-term goal is to rebuild the intersection with bridge removal and concrete pavement construction taking place over the next 12 months, Jaret Lansford with First Alert 6 Traffic reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lansford encourages drivers to use caution and expect delays in this area. He says alternate routes include using I-80 for eastbound and westbound traffic, and 84th for northbound and southbound traffic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Track the latest updates on construction and commutes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/traffic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\">our First Alert 6 Traffic Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Settlement over Omaha Police Dept. firing approved by city council<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">On Tuesday, Omaha\u2019s City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/15\/omaha-city-council-agenda-notes-september-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/15\/omaha-city-council-agenda-notes-september-16\/\">approved a settlement<\/a> to resolve a lawsuit with a former OPD captain in federal court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/12\/omaha-settles-2nd-lawsuit-with-former-police-captain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2025\/09\/12\/omaha-settles-2nd-lawsuit-with-former-police-captain\/\">Katherine Belcastro-Gonzalez<\/a> sued the city last year, claiming she had been wrongly terminated after she successfully sued the city for discrimination. She won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2022\/09\/12\/former-omaha-police-captain-wins-lawsuit-against-city-police-chief\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$700,000 in damages, lost wages, and benefits<\/a> for being passed over twice for a promotion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Belcastro-Gonzalez had been the subject of an OPD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2022\/01\/20\/omaha-police-captain-placed-administrative-leave\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Internal Affairs investigation<\/a> concerning emails sent to her City of Omaha email address, which she then forwarded to her personal address. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Police Chief Todd Schmaderer claimed she had been fired due to her poor performance on the job.
